Home Economics/
Family Studies
The Department of Home Economics/Family Studies in
the College of Professional Studies offers the Bachelor of
Science, the Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, and
the Associate of Science degrees. Current faculty members
are listed at the end of this section.
INTRODUCTION
The focus of Home Economics/Family Studies is the
individual, the family, and the interaction of families
regarding changes in their social and physical
environments. Courses are offered and degree programs
are designed to provide individuals, both men and women,
with the knowledge and skills needed for employment in
Home Economics/Family Studies careers.
Home Economics/Family Studies professionals work with
and for people in education, business, government, human
services, and research. They work in such diverse settings
as child care facilities, schools, colleges, and universities;
stores and studios; governmental agencies; research
laboratories; and homes. The demand for employees
exceeds the supply of qualified professionals in many areas,
especially those requiring master's or doctoral degrees.
The academic preparation for all Home Economics/Family
Studies majors builds upon an interdisciplinary base of
knowledge that includes a Home Economics/Family
Studies core (family and child development, consumer
science and family resource management, food and
nutrition, housing, and textiles and clothing); the arts;
biological, physical, and social sciences; and Biblical
studies.
The purposes of this department are to provide the
academic preparation that will contribute to: (1) personal
development; (2) Christian family life and home
responsibilities; (3) responsible citizenship; (4)
development of professional competencies needed for
employment in fields related to home economics and
family studies; and (5) the foundation needed for graduate
study in areas related to the home and family.
Majors offered through the Department of Home
Economics/Family Studies that lead to the Bachelor of
Science degree include: Fashion Merchandising; Food,
Nutrition, and Dietetics; General Home Economics;
Human Development/Family Studies; and Interior
Design. The Bachelor of Science in Home Economics is
awarded to students majoring in Vocational Home
Economics Education. All Bachelor of Science degreeprograms require a minimum of 128 hours for graduation.
The Bachelor of Science in Home Economics degree
requires 135 hours. A Child Development Associate
program leading to a 67-hour Associate of Science degree
is also available. The Department of Home Economics/
Family Studies has a well-rounded curriculum, qualified
faculty, excellent teaching facilities, and a commitment to
outstanding teaching.
