Therapy
Adviser: Dr. Tom Milholland
The Department of Marriage and Family offers a
marriage and family therapy program (MFT) leading to
a 60-hour master's degree in marriage and family
therapy (MMFT). Training in this field is by nature
interdisciplinary and, therefore, includes relevant courses
in psychology, sociology, ministry, and marriage and
family therapy. The degree is designed to be completed
in 24 consecutive months.
The primary objective of the degree is to provide
professional training for persons intending to occupy
positions in such areas as community mental health
agencies, children and family services agencies, church
ministries, institutional settings, and private practice.
The program combines the theoretical, experiential,
and spiritual aspects of marriage and family therapy. In
addition to academic and professional preparation, the
program provides students an opportunity to receive
clinical training in the department's marriage and
family clinic.
The MFT program is accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation for the American Association for Marriage
and Family Therapy (AAMFT). The curriculum is
intended to prepare students to become certified
members of AAMFT. Completion of the MFT degree
does not, of course, guarantee certification by AAMFT.
The degree does provide graduates with minimums of
500 hours of clinical experience and 100 hours of
approved supervision that are applicable toward associate
membership in AAMFT. Upon completion of all
academic and clinical requirements, a MFT graduate
can apply for associate membership in the AAMFT.
Prerequisites
No specific undergraduate major is essential for admission
to graduate study for the MFT program. Applicants are
encouraged to have undergraduate credit in subjects
which embrace human development, family relations,
sociology, psychology and statistics.Applicants without adequate preparation may be
accepted upon the condition that they register for
additional courses deemed necessary by the adviser.
Degree Requirements
Students are expected to take the following required
courses in the order listed and at the load specified.
