This fund is administered by a committee composed of the vicepresident,
the dean, and the bursar of the college.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee F. Powell Foundation for Christian Education.This
loan fund, for assisting worthy young people in need
of financial help, was established in 1947 by Mr. and Mrs. Lee F.
Powell, of Paducah, Kentucky, both graduates of Abilene Christian
College. Applicants for loans are to be considered from the standpoint
of character, worthiness, and financial need. Young men who
have dedicated their lives to the ministry of God's word are to
receive special consideration.
Scholarships
Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship.-In July, 1947, Mrs. George
W. Birchfield, of Fort Worth, Texas, created in Abilene Christian
College the Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship. This award,
established in memory of Mrs. Birchfield's mother, amounts to
$250.00 annually. It was set up for the benefit of worthy students
who are descendants of Frances Buster Armstrong. Mrs. Birchfield
will designate during her lifetime each year in writing the
student who is to benefit from this scholarship. She has chosen
Dee A. Armstrong and Hulan Armstrong to select the persons to
receive this award each year after her demise. These men will
choose their successor or successors to make these annual awards,
and they in turn will select their successors. In this way the
Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship awards will always be
handled by a self-perpetuating agency.
James C. Armstrong Scholarship.--In May, 1949, Mrs. George W.
Birchfield, of Fort Worth, Texas, created in Abilene Christian
College another or second scholarship to be known as the James
C. Armstrong Scholarship. This award of $250 per annum is in
memory of Mrs. Birchfield's father. The terms and conditions of
this scholarship are no different from the first one she founded.
It is to be administered in the same way by the same parties as the -
Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship described above.
Nannie E. Ferguson Scholarship.-February 21, 1941, Abilene
Christian College received $826.32 through the will of Nannie E.
Ferguson of Franklin, Tennessee. The will specified that the income
from this fund is "to be used by the college to help educate worthy
boys and girls who are desirous of an education." The income from
this fund will amount to $50 for each 9 months. The student each
year who benefits from this scholarship will be selected by the Administration
of the College in accordance with the will of the donor.
Special Scholarships.-For the first time during 1948-49 the school
granted four special scholarships to first year students. These21
