3350. Feature Writing
A study of newspaper and magazine feature articles. Emphasis on identifying subjects, research,
interviewing, and writing. Prerequisites: Comm. 1319, 1320.
3351. Magazine Production (3-3)
Develops skills in producing magazines, including practical application of the principles of
typography, photography, layout, and production. Prerequisites: Comm. 2341, 2342, 3361 or
permission of instructor.
3360. Television Production (3-3)
All elements of television production are studied. Included are the camera, audio, lighting, graphics,
production, and direction. The labs provide production experience. Prerequisites: Comm. 1313
and 1316.
3361. Graphic Design
Introduction to advertising design. A transition course in which basic design principles are adapted
to commercial illustration. Analysis of outstanding works of graphic arts.
3362. Radio and Television Writing
A study of aural style, format, the writing of music, continuity, public service announcements,
commercials, talk programs, newscasts, documentaries, and drama.
3364. Religious Radio and Television (3-3)
A study of the need, history, purposes, audience, outlets, programs, technical phases, production,
follow-up and administration of religious broadcasting. Labs feature visiting speakers, field trips,
listening to religious broadcasts, and program production.
3377. Effects of Mass Communication
A consideration of the social, political, and economic impact of the mass media upon society.
Emphasis is given to philosophical and empirical evidence of the capabilities and limitations of
the mass media. Prerequisite: Comm. 3340.
3378. Advertising Principles
Advertising's role in business; campaigns, budgets, media, and personnel; survey of principles
applicable to the production of advertising.
3379. Religious Communication Theory
Theoretic analysis of religious mass communication with emphasis on the application of contemporary
theories and principles of communication. Prerequisite: Comm. 3340 or permission
of instructor.
4100. Guided Study
Independent study in one of four areas: advertising-public relations, news-editorial, radiotelevision,
or theory. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor.
4376. Public Relations
Modern concepts of public relations, emphasizing ways businesses and institutions interpret
themselves to society and communicate their messages to various publics.
4385. Organizational Communication
The theory and function of communication within businesses, government, hospitals, schools,
industrial firms, and other organizations with emphasis on concepts and principles needed for
effective management. Prerequisite: Comm. 3340 or permission of instructor.
4388. Communication Law
Freedom and responsibility of print and broadcast media under the law. First Amendment principles
and legal philosophy affecting the media and employees.
4389. Secondary School Journalism
A consideration of basic journalistic skills and administrative abilities needed by secondary school
journalism teachers and publications advisers. Prerequisites: Comm. 1319, 1320, 2341, 2342.
4390. Advanced Advertising (3-3)
The analysis, design, and production of advertising with emphasis on media buying, copy writing,
and audience selection. Prerequisite: Comm. 3378.
4399. Practicum in Mass Communication
On-the-job training for a minimum of 112 hours under the direction of the senior's major sequence
instructor. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor.
Communication-Drama
1137. Theatre Workshop: Technical
A practical course in technical aspects of dramatic production. The course may be repeated for a
maximum of three hours credit.84
