Chairman of Department: B. J. Humble
Director of Graduate Studies: Furman Kearley
Major field concentrations leading to the Master of Arts Degree are available in Old
and New Testament, Ancient Church History, Restoration History, Doctrinal Studies,
Biblical Greek, and Missions. Concentrations leading to the Master of Science Degree
are offered in Ministry and Evangelism, Religious Education, and Missions.
The MA and MS programs mentioned above permit study in depth in a somewhat
restricted area. They are intended to provide a background for further graduate study,
for teaching careers in colleges and schools, and for specific ministries in the church.
ACU also offers the MA or MS in Biblical and Related Studies. This is a somewhat
broader program which includes courses from several areas of the Bible Department.
Currently this program is being offered not only on-campus but in a few selected
off-campus locations. For information, please contact either Dr. Humble or Dr. Kearley.
The Master of Missiology Degree serves well the needs of specialists in Missions
who need both a broad training in mission work and Biblical studies and yet cannot
afford the time for more extensive training.
The Master of Religious Education Degree is offered primarily to provide a higher
degree of specialization and efficiency for education directors, directors of elementary,
youth, and adult work, college professors of religious education, and writers of Bible
class literature. The degree also provides excellent training for directors of Bible chairs
in state colleges and universities, preachers, elders, and Bible school teachers. The course
of study is structured to give a strong foundation in the Bible with such other studies
which deal with the practicalities of planning and administering a program of work in
the area of the student's interest and preparation.
The Master of Divinity Degree allows a breadth of preparation not possible in the
other degree programs and is intended primarily to prepare men for more effective
ministry of the word in preaching, in the educational work of the local church, and in
missionary work at home and abroad. The Master of Divinity Degree also represents
excellent preparation for teaching in Bible chair situations and for doctoral work in Biblical
studies.
Attention is called also to a Master of Arts degree program in Religious Communication,
which is described elsewhere in this catalog. Please refer to the index for page numbers.
