Departmental requirements for the BA in life-earth science
are as follows:
1. Required major field courses, 36-37 hours: BIOL
112/114, 113/115, 221/223 or 222/224, 301,
353/357, 492/495; plus 7 hours from BIOL
312/313, 362, 364, 370, 465, 475, 484, 491, 497;
plus two of the following courses: PHYS 101,
GEOL 111, or AGRO 233.
2. Required chemistry courses, 8 hours: CHEM
131/133, 132/134, or CHEM 111/113, 112/114.
3. Course concentration in another department, 12
hours: selected from agriculture, business, chemistry,
geology; other areas require individual approval.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student seeking
a BA in biology must take 25 hours of general electives
including deficiency requirements in science and foreign
language. The BA in life-earth science requires 18-19
hours of general electives including deficiency requirements
in science and foreign language. The student must arrange
electives to ensure 33 semester hours of advanced work.
Teacher Certification
Specific University Core requirements for biology or
life-earth science for teacher certification are:
English: ENGL 111 and 221.
History: HIST 221.
Specific BA Degree Core requirements for biology or lifeearth
science for teacher certification are:
English: ENGL 112, 222.
Social and Behavioral Sciences: HIST 222, POLS 226,
and SOCI 342.
Requirements for Teacher Certification
Specific requirements for all teacher certifications in
biology or life-earth science are as follows:
1. Technology, 2-3 hours: TECH 205 or appropriate test
score, 210.
2. Reading, 3 hours: READ 322.
3. Professional education, 18 hours: EDUC 311, 321,
412, 432, 488, and 498.
4. Special Education, 1 hour: SPED 478.
5. Pass all three sections of the TASP.
6. Be admitted to the teacher certification program
(prerequisite to EDUC courses).
7. Pass all appropriate sections of the ExCET.
8. Minimum GPA in 12 hours of freshman and
sophomore English: 2.00.
9. Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.50.Departmental Requirements: Biology for
Teacher Certification
Biology is available in a one-field or two-field program as
well as through a BS in interdisciplinary studies as one of
two teaching fields (see the education section of the catalog
for the BS in interdisciplinary studies). Departmental
requirements for the BA in biology for teacher certification
are as follows:
One-Field Biology
1. Required biology courses, 36 hours: BIOL 112/114,
113/115, 221/223 or 222/224, 312, 351, 353/357,
362/364, 492/495 and 6 additional hours of
advanced biology.
2. Required chemistry courses, 12 hours: CHEM
131/133, 132/134, 221/223.
Two-Field Biology
1. Required biology courses, 30 hours: BIOL 112/114,
113/115, 221/223 or 222/224, 353/357, 362/364,
492/495, and 6 additional hours of advanced biology.
2. Required chemistry courses, 8 hours: CHEM
131/133, 132/134.
3. A second teaching field of at least 24 hours. See the
education section of the catalog for second teaching
field requirements.
Departmental Requirements: Life-Earth Science for
Teacher Certification
Life-earth science is available in a one-field or two-field
program as well as through a BS in interdisciplinary studies
as one of two teaching fields (see the education section
of the catalog for the BS in interdisciplinary studies).

for teacher certification are as follows:
One-Field Life-Earth Science
1. Required biology courses, 27 hours: BIOL 112/114,
113/115, 221/223, 222/224, 301, 353/357, 362/364.
2. Required chemistry courses, 8 hours: CHEM
111/113, 112/114 or 131/133, 132/134.
3. Supporting courses, 6 hours: choose two courses
from AGRO 233, GEOL 111, PHYS 101.
4. Additional support area, 12 additional hours from
one of the following areas: Agriculture, chemistry,
computer science, health, mathematics, exercise
science, or physics.
Two-Field Life-Earth Science
1. Required biology courses, 19 hours: BIOL 112/114,
113/115, 221/223 or 222/224, 301, 353/357,
362/364.
2. Required chemistry courses, 8 hours: CHEM
111/113, 112/114 or 131/133, 132/134.
3. Supporting courses, 3 hours: choose one course from
AGRO 233 or GEOL 111.
