COUNTRY EDITOB
WO CRITICISMS of the paper have been included with two
letters from outofstate readers which also contained some words
of praise along with renewals Both readers complained that we are
lacking in weather news
Weve tried to determine what the readers had in mind inasmuch
as we always include rainfall and snow reports unusually high wind
velocities extremely high or low temperatures hall reports as
well as general crop conditions When the weather is not mentioned
it is implied that It is normal for the season
Beginning this week we are Including the daily high and low temperatures
in the Town Topics column which is proving to be rather
popular We are having a little difficulty keeping It within the space
allotted
COUNTRY EDITOR
RNEST JOINER of Rails noted a recent story in the Andrews
News which pointed out that only four women had died in
Andrews since the first of the year compared with 1G men and none
of the four were buried In tho Andrews cemetery
This proves that even in death women are hellbent on taking their
business out of town says Joiner who also noted that nine of the
1G men were locally buried and six men who died outside Andrews
were brought there for burial Which proves I hope that a man can
and will fill a womans place In Andrews at least but he has got to
bo pretty dead to do it
COUNTRY EDITOR
DGAR R HAYS the halfbreed editor of The Lockney Bea
con half Baptist and half Shlvercrat and woe be to anyone
who suggests that either might bo fallible wrote last week
Will wonders never cease H M Baggarly editor of the Tulia
Herald has for years condemned the ShiversDaniel faction In state
politics vowing that no one connected with the group was politically or
intellectually honest and expressing doubt to their mental abilities
Now ho comes out with an editorial headed Governor Champions
Peoples Cause and commending Governor Price Daniel for his fight
to tax the oil and gas interests instead of the people Its nice to know
that even Mr Baggarly can be wrong and admit It
COUNTRY EDITOR
HB CONFUSED EDITORS allegations concerning what wo
think of Shivers and Daniel supporters do not deserve the dig
nity of comment
Mr Hayes behaves like a frisky nag with a cocklebur under her
tail whenever anybody suggests that the Baptist hierarchy of Texas
might bo dabbling In partisan politics We suspect that our recent
comments on church nnd state separation prompted his Journalistic spasm
As to our editorial comments commending Price Daniel for his
stand on taxation during tho recent session of tho legislature we reaffirm
every word wo wrote and at tho same time admit no mistake in
judgment of Daniel and the machine which brought him back to Texas
from tho U S Senato because it thought him to be tho only person who
could defeat Ralph Yarborough for governor of Texas
Mr Hayes1 like so many of tho reactionary faction ho typifies cannot
understand the behavior of those who attempt to give credit where
credit Is duo Mr Hayes who calls himself a Democrat and us a
socialist has never found It within his heart to write one kind word for
such Democrats as Adlal Stevenson Ralph Yarborough Harry Truman
and other state and national Democratic standard bearers since he
has published the Lockney paper Regardless of how one might disagree
with these men It Is Indeed strange that a good Democrat
such as Mr Hayes has been unablo to find even one tiny Insignificant
commcndablo trait In any of those and other Democrats since they
first appeared on tho American scene
It is understandable why Mr Hayos can Interpret a kind word
for Mr Daniel from our Remington only as a repudiation of every
thing political wo have ever written and as an admission that we
havo been wrong In our past condemnations of Price Daniel I
COUNTRY EWTOR
rllAT MR HAYES does not know and probably will never loam
is that no public official is either white or black and that all
political selections are made on the basis of choosing the man or party

Attention of football fans will be
focused on Canyon Friday night
where the Eagles meet the Dim

21 record Tulias record is 31
Should Canyon win their victory
over Tulia would give them the
district crown but if they lose Tul
ia becomes the undisputed champ
on the basis of the smashing triumph
of the Hornets over Dimmltt by a
score of 1614
The Hornets outgamed the Bobcats
by alertness in grabbing a
couple of passes which they turned
into touchdowns and the cocksure
combination of Jerry Vandergriffs
second line of Davis Bates Mars
and Poagc
Hornet guard Sidney Davis in
the alert Vandergriff who batted
down the pass attempt for extra
points
Early in the third quarter Coffee
snagged a Tulia pass on his own

line Five plays were enough totally
a touchdown with Barnes passing
to Ratcllff for 2 points after
Coffee ran it over from the 4 yard

Tulla City Council was petitioned
last week to open Dallas Avenue
through the school campus and to
pave tho street The petition was
accepted and presented to the newly
appointed Street Paving CommitteeThe committee headed by John
Zleglcr is crmposed of C W Hose
Bob Goodwin Dr R L Massey
Fay Tidwell and Laverne Kleman
Purpose of the committee is to
study traffic problems paving problems
and problems arising from
changes in the present traffic pattern
For example should Dallas
be opened it will be necessary to
Institute safety measures such as
traffic lights or patrolmen directional
traffic and the like
The petition signed by 45 citizens
read We the undersigned who
are interested in Dallas St between
Highway 8G and Farm to Market
Road 14G do hereby petition the
city council to open Dallas Avenue
through the school area and to
pave Dallas since such street has
a heavy traffic county There is
insufficient drainage on such street
because the water stands in bar
ditches and creates a breeding
place for mosquitoes It is also
difficult for some citizens to get
out of their driveways in bad weatherIt has been hoped that tho State
Highway Department will participate
in the paving of this street
since a connecting link between
FM Road UG and SH 8G has been
needed for several years The
state will participate in no connecting
links which are closed to
traffic at any time
It Is possible that the appointed
committee could recommend the
calling of an election to determine
the desires of the citizens concerning
the opening of Dallas through
the school campus
Representatives of the Housing
and Home Finance agency discussed
with the council the Urban Renewal
program which is designed
to eliminate substandard housing
and to assist low income families
with special FHA loans that will
permit such families to own their
own homes with payments In most
cases lower than tho rent they are
now paying for substandard housingfingers of Billy Dick in snaring
them
Scarcely less thrilling however
was the tremendous charging of
the Tulia line which on defense held
the alleged unstoppable Junior Coffee
to net yardage on the ground
of 59 yards In 17 tries an average
of just over 3 yards per carry The

THE TULIA HERALD has not instituted a policy of
running advertisements on the front page unless the ads
are as old or older than those in the accompanying illustrations
from the February 1C00 issue of The Cosmopolitan
furnished us by Tommy White local laboratory technician
Price of the 350page slick paper magazine then in its 28th
year was only 10c per copy
Court Monday morning ordered an
election for Saturday Nov 28 at
which time county citizens will bo
given an opportunity to vote an
ad valorem tax not to exceed 30c
on each 100 valuation for t purpose
of financing that cost of operating
Swisher County hospital which
Is not provided by patient revenue
The court pointed out that this
proposed 30c tax would not be as
much as It appears in that tho
county tax has been reduced three
cents this year because of paying
off part of the bonded indebtedness
on Highway 87 rightofway It
will be reduced another five cents
In 19G0 because more bonds will
be paid off This reduces the amount
of interest each year So
In reality the county will be paying
only 22c above what was paid
In county taxes in 1958 if the proposal
carries
It is also noted that county valuations
are low much lower than
city and school valuations and the
53000 all homesteads Is
