TV0 OCCASIONS in Greenville S C and in New Orleans
ON Johnson was heckled by banners borne by Democrats for Nixon
Some of the placards read LBJTexas Low Horn Walter Reuthir
Spoalts Today LIU rriend of Socialism I BJ Labor Run Oil
Owned LfiJ Counterfeit Confederate Texas Wears Black for I
Benedict Johnson I
He handled the situation in Greenville with dignity and skill He
departed from his prepared speach and spoke off the culf Pointing Ito
the banner Walter Reuther Speaks Today he told the crowd
that he and Walter Reuhcr had seldom seen eye to eye on issues I
that Reuther had been one of his severest critics that Keuther hail
been Investigated by Congress and by other bodies All were unable
to prove him guilty of wrong doing
Then he turned to the young lady carrying the banner
He told her some of the things that had been proved on Harry
Bridgos and James Hoffa He reminded her that both Bridges and
Hoffa are vigorously supporting Richard Nixon for President He said
that never once had Richard Nixon been called upon to explain the
support of Bridges and Hoffa
Then he turned to the banner on Socialism and reminded the
crowd Abat the Republicans or Democrats for Nixon consider sot
lalUtic He asked why the Republican administration hadn I taken steps
to abolish social security and other measures they call socialistic
COUNTS IDITOI
CLIMAX of the trip was in New Orleans where for the
FITTIVG
first lime in history the cily staged the Mardi firas parade out of
season all for the benefit of Lyndon We rode in the parade then
were whisked by the police to the reviewing stand where we saw it
from a vantage point One hundred thousand neoplt were on hand
according to the police Yet New Orleans Republican paper came out
the next morning gave the event a 2 column head near the bottrm
of the page ran a horrible looking picture of Johnson and never
mentioned the number of people on hand
Almost everywhere we went the daily papers wrote critical edl
torials Usually they timed their first page endorsements of Nixon to
coincide with Johnson s arrival
Johnson last fhursday urged people to watch the Great Debate
ltd told them to listen to the candidates first hand because what
they would read the next morning in their newspapers would likely
be an entirely different story
couNitr loitoi
TRUMAN was the one who suggested this speclil train
HARRY
He told lyndon to skip Boston New York Chicago an J Dillas
and go directly to the grassroots directly to I he people And it paid
off The crowds were warm and friendly But the greatest value of
the trip was In smokinp out the Southern governors and Senators
same of whom had been pouting since the convention With only a
few exceptions thty pulled out all the stops In urging their people 1
to vole Democratic telling thtm that the poor have only two fntnds
The Good Lord and the Democratic Party
liven Senator Herman Tnlmadge of Georgia said publicly that
Johnson was the South s best friend a much better friend than Henry
Cabot Lodge and that Johnson was going In be elected in November
Senator Russell of Georgia warmly endorsed Johnson
Governors flllnglnn of Icnmsste Vandiver of Georgia Almond 1
rf Virginia Hodges of North Carolina and Collins of I loriili all rode
the train and used all the Southern superlatives they kniw in boost 1
ing Johnson and Kennedy Senators Smalhers of I lorlda Olin Johnson
of South Carolina I astland and Stennis of Mississippi long ind I lien
der of Louisiana lister Hill and John Sparktnan of Alabama all did
as much
The conclusion was that the Democrats will likely carry every I
Southern state The Southern peupc usually listen to their Southern I
leaders in times like these
COUMTllf IBITOI
THE TRIP WAS of tremendous personal value to us as an mdivi
dual Riding a train such as the IBJ Victory Special sort of
brings everyone down to the same level Everybody lets his hair
down We made interesting contacts
Governor Ellington bought us a cup of coffee one night at n dinky
eating place near a railroad station V > e gossiped with governors and
senators about various Democrats We went with Bb Abemethy of NBC
one night to mail television film to New York which appeared the
next morning on the Dave Garrt > ay show Bob Russell son of Sena1
tor Russell of Georgia bought our breakfast and that of John Ben
Shepperd one morning Vse autographed a dinner menu for one of the
governors who was collecting signatures for his young daughter at
home All these little personal things we shall long remember I
COUNIlr IDITOI
PERHAPS THE most significant value of the trip was the strengthened
confidence in the Democratic ticket which it gave Vie
often hear the charge of radicalism and socialism levelled at >
the Democratic ticket After talking to Johnson listening to his phil 1
osophy of government observing his sanity and soundness in atlemp
ing to deal with the problems of the day after hearing him describe I
the real Kennedy not the one you read about in Republican dailies
after hearing such men as Herman Talmadge Dick Russell tostland
and Ellender all conservatives and Baptists express their confidence
In Johnson and Kinnedy it points out the absurdity of the asinine
charges we hear hurled from uninformed and ignorant people It causes
one to ask Would Herman Talmadge or Dick Russell vote for a
leftwinger or a socialise Would these Baptists vote for a man whom
they felt would violate the principle of separation of church and state
couNtir idiioi
MANY Or THE press representatives on this trip have traveled
with all the candidates They were about the most unprejudiced
open minded man weve ever seen They are objective and are
out to know the real Kennedy the real Johnson the real Nion
and the real Lodge
The concensus of opinion among these nationally known newsmen
seemed to be that Kennedy would make an excellent President that
Johnson is tops and highly qualified that Lodge is good material
but that Vixon simply won t do They mentioned his mean beady
eyes on television when Kennedy was talking during the first debate
his Ill kill you lock when he is angry his wavering coivictions
wbkh melted in the presence of Nelson Rockefeller an inexperienced
politician his tendency to smear and they pointed out that
each time Nixon h s run for office a smear campaign has been conducted
agaiiuK his opponent In short the general feeling toward Nixon
by most of these people was one of contempt Ihe working press and
we know ol no better inhumed group is overwhelmingly Democratic
violently antiNixon
