In Diagram A, the helicopter is in IFR conditions. Low visibility on the surface prohibits a
landing. If he continues flight at this present altitude there will be excessive ice buildup on his
aircraft.
If he knows where the freezing level is, the aviator could ascend into the warm air mass above
freezing temperatures. If the flight were under VFR conditions at a lower altitude than shown
above with surface temperature below 0 degrees C, he should descend and land, or reverse course.WARM
