Rock is now being loaded at the quarry,
and the first shipment on the new contract
will reach Velasco about Thursday, Jan-
uary 2..
The old year goes out to-day beautifully
clear and cold, with every prospect for 1896
to step in brig-lit and new.
The tug: Ste'la went down to the jetties
with a party from the syndicate office this
morning. They are inspecting things to be
ready to tackle the rock as fast as It ar-
rives,

Texas City, Tex., Dec. 31.—The tug Mar-
garet of Texas City left to-day for Lynch-
burg to tow down the big (Aredge Florida,
which is to finish the Texa9 City channel.
L. Buckley of Cozad, Neb., and J. G.
Speauiing of Webstar, Tex., were in town
this morning.
J. W. Livingstone, Geo. Robertson, Dr.
McKay and C. C. Jewell left to-day by boat
for a hunting trip up the bay and Trinity
river.
Cotton receipts for December were 14,991
bales, and eighteen cars to-day.
G. A. Bliffuna, president of the La Crosse
lumber company, and a prominent capital'

town to-day. Mr. Buffum was well pleased

The tug: Annie Laurie was In port to-

The Christmas tree at the union Sunday

The strike at the cotton docks was off
to-day. New men were brought to take
the places of the strikers.
So far 14,306 bales of cotton have been
received h^e .this month. Seven hundred
and ninety-one bales were received to-day.
Contract?# Tinlin has begun the removal
of Cat island, the reef made by the dredge

L. H. McCarty and family have gone to
Dublin, Tex. Mr. McCarty was the emgin*

DICKINSON.
Dickinson, Tex., Dec. 30.—Sunday evening
a mlaui named Leith, on A.McDonald's place,
twi mites above Dickinson, was accident-
aDy shot by the young son of Mr. McDon-
ald. The load or small shot was iired at
close r'ange and entered the hip of Leith,
causing a painful and dangerous wound.
Dr. Lovelace of Dickinson was called ami
dressed thr> wound, after which Leith was
bent to Galveston to the hospital. It seems
to have men the old story, "Didn't know
it wad loaded."

mometer was down to 28 last night.
There will be several horse races over the
Texas Coast fair track and for good purses
on New Year's day.
PORT LAVACA NOTES.
Port Lavaca, Calhoun Co., Tex., Dec. 30.—
The young Jaid'ies of Port Lavkea will make
a big feature of New Year's day, and tihls
afternoon, with the ass-ls'tanee of some of
the young men, went out and gathered mis-
tletoe and ot'her green shrubbery for deco-
rative purposes.
A large crowd of German and Bohemian
farmers from Lavaca coutnty reached here
overland Sa'tnwAsy on a prospect torg trip.
They had acquaintances in the big settle-
ment wj mUss above town and came to
look at hoim# cu the couvt, with a view of
mating next tail. Three new houses are
now 3n course of erection in the settlement

soon as a tax can be levltd. The settle-
ment new has a sufficient number of schoU
ars for a large school.
Mr. McCrtary. a Virginia business man,

rived h«r$. He spent several days looking

county and has decided to locate aid open

the pecoiid dry goods house to open here
lately.
BRAZOS SYNDICATE MATTERS.
Velasco, Tex., Dec. 30.—It Is officially an-
nounced this morning that the members
of the Brazos syndicate will be here on
January 15, and it is expected that the
principal stockholders from both Boston
and Chicago will be on hand. There will
also be a delegation of the leading citizens
of M&tagorda tounty and representatives
of the Tejtt^' colonization company and of
the Texa£ coast canal company here to
confer with the syndicate regarding the
railroad and canal projects which are
pointing to Velasco. The members of the
syndicate iaave timed their trip here so as
to arrive after the work under the present
contract has be»uu.
Velasco was visited yesterday morning
by another downpour of rain, which lasted
some time. The wind changed to the
rorth about 12 o'clock and is blowing a
regular whistler.
Tug Stella and barges got in safe last
night from Galveston.
COURT AT BELLVILLB.
Bellville, Dec. Si.—The winter term of the
district court convened here yesterday,
Judge TeichmUUer on the bench. No busi-
ness has been transacted further than or-
ganizing the grand and petit juries and
setting cases for trial. Fourteen persons
are confined in jail awaiting action on
these cases by the grand jury. The fol-
lowing murder cases have been set for
trial: Reuben Boulware, January 18; Frank
Barnhill, January 18, and Bill Tottenham
for January 14, and special venires ordered.
REMAINS OF A MASTODON.
Whartoij, Tex., Dec. 31.—Prof. Edgar
Bramjette left yesterday tor his home at
Fort Wor'tih.
Judge W W. King of San Antowlo ar-
rived in Wharton yes»terduy.
Mr. J. W. Elkins found a large bone yes-
terday protruding from the river bank, sup-
posed to be part of Che rema.ns of a mas-
todon. The portion of "bone found by Mr.
Elkims Is the -head and week, the former be-
ing perfectly sound, tlhe lower part naving
decayed and fallen away. The bone meas-
ures twenty inches atr\)«nd.
NORTH GALVESTON.
North Galveston, Tex., Dec. 30.—This
town was visited yesterday by a severe
thunder and rain storm, winding up with
a norther. The first ice of the season in
this section forced last night.
General Manager Heffron of the Galves-
ton, La Porte and Houstoh, passed over the
line yesterday In a special train.

MATAQORDA.
Matagorda, Matagorda CO., Tex., Dec. 27.
—There was a mask ball at the Odd Fel-
lows' hall last night, given by the young
men of the town. It was a notable success.
The schooner Golden Arrow arrived here
last week from Galveston, well loaded with
freight for this place.
Dr. A. M. Pelton of Bay City is building
a fine two-story office here, with the view
of locating.

The schooner George Toulane, Jr., of

East Bernard, Wharton Co., Tex., Dec.
30.—A good rain has fallen here in the past
twenty-four hours, and wound up with
about the .heaviest norther of the sea»on.
Plenty of ice this morning, and the ground
frozen, with a very cold wind from the
west.

Germontown, Goliad Co., Tex., Dec. 29.—
Yest'erdlay morning: a cold wet south wind
blew here, changing to the north during
