Lipscomb County Historical
Survey Committee
The Lipscomb County Historical Survey Committee's function is to inform the people of Lipscomb County
of the work being done to preserve, mark, and record the history of our county. They have two goals in
mind:
1. To create a greater appreciation for those who made present-day Lipscomb County possible.
2. To enlist your help in developing the history of the county.
The 58th Texas State Legislature directed each county judge to appoint a county historical survey committee
to serve two-year periods and the commissioners court to underwrite this committee out of general
funds. We are, therefore, the official state organization for surveying, preserving, recording, and marking
Lipscomb County history.
Accomplishments of the committee are:
1. Erected seven Official Texas Historical Markers and plan to erect seven more by 1976.
2. Encouraged the writing of two historical books - "Pioneers of the Prairie" and "Dimensions of Progress."3. Sponsored historical displays and essay contests.
4. Restored the old Northeast Cornerstone.
5. Started a collection of pictures, artifacts, and an oral history library of Lipscomb County pioneers.
6. Engaged local artists to paint and to sketch scenes from our county history for use in historical displays.7. Pledged to help in the beautification of Lipscomb County.
8. Succeeded in getting signs erected designating the creek names on state highways.
9. Contributed to the Texas Historical Foundation.
10. Participated in annual meetings of the Texas Historical Survey Committee and in historical programs
of neighboring counties.
11. Received a Distinguished Service Citation in 1969 by the State Historical Survey Committee.
12. Sponsored a contest to select the design for a Lipscomb County flag and presented awards to the winners.13. Instigated the formation of the Lipscomb County Bicentennial Committee.
14. Wrote, edited, and designed A History of Lipscomb County.
On Friday, February 28, 1975, all the schools in the county had a share in officially establishing Lipscomb
County as a Bicentennial County. The school children and adults attended the recognition ceremonies at
Lipscomb when Leroy Tillery, state representative for the Bicentennial Committee, presented awards to the
mayors of each community, to the County Judge, Warren Jenkins, and to the chairman of the county bicentennial
committee, Mildred Becker.
