l'l <■-1's it seems impossible that
any complete document can even be
initiated before Christmas.
Rumors now are in circulation that
January 24 lias been fixed as the
tentative date for signing the pact.
Any considerable vacation over
Christinas seems unlikely, largely be-
cause of Turkey's determination
that there shall be no lull in the
conference until definite terms -of
peace are agreed upon at least In
principle, or until It is clear that
there can be no agreement. The
Turks have insisted so vigorously
upon continuing work throughout
the approaching holidays that the
other delegations virtually have ab-
andoned plans for an extended re-
cess.
i.smet Pasha has been instructed by
his government not to permit a break
in the conference until some defi-
nite decision is reached.
Turkey has 250,000 men under
amis and practically all in the
trenches. She does not propose to
keep them in suspense unnecessarily
in order to allow European diplomats
to spend Christmas and the en Year
with their families.
"Our soldiers are needed at home
and on the farms niul in the villa-
ges, which must be reconstructed
and restored," said Ismet. "We want
to know as soon as possible wheth-
er we ran release them fur tlte recon-
struction Turkey badly needs."
Ambassador Richard Washburn
Child, as head of the American dele-
gation to the Near East conference,
plans to make a protest auainst the
Turkish proposal to expel the Greek
patriarch from Constantinople at
this afternoon's meeting of tin- <nb-
eoiuniissibn on minorities.
