Ill SPflJIYS OIL
GAS STRUCK AT 1,174 FEGT
MILES KOUTIIWKBT OF
SHOWN WOOD.
II
(Tempi* Telegram Special.)
llrownwood, Tex., March SI.—The
well of Magee and Fuller on the
Hoenicke tract fourteen miles south-
nest of Brownwood is spraying oil
. and has eight million feet of gas.
The gas was struck at 1,174 feet,
and the spray of oil .began thirty
feet below the gas. As soon as the
oil sand wos touched the well was
shut down and a K-lneh casing is be-
ing set inside the 6 G-8-lnch casing,
to shiit off the gas and enable the
drillers to develop the oil sand. The
spray of oil is heavy, covering 'the
derrick within a few minutes and
making work on the well extremely
difficult.
This well is three-quarters of a
mile south of the Magee gassers. In
the first wells drilled, which were
on the Waller cpunty school land,
three wet gas strata were found in
shallow sands, but in the Boenicke
well showings of oil were found at
Ibe same levels. The 1,174-foot gai
is dry. The drillers believe they
have traced the dip of the structure,
toward the southwest, and that r
good well will be brought In. This
well is only a few miles from tha
gas mid oil wells of the Trickham
field, but Is showing much better
than those wells.
George T. Orah.am, No. 1, Brovyn
league survey, was spudded Friday
by the Producers' Development and
Refining company. A first class
standard rig has been erected for
this well, and It is located on a
well-defined structure half way be-
tween the Sinclair and Gosa wells.
Drilling has been resumed on both
the Sinclair and Partridge wells in
the northern part of the county, fol-
lowing the setting of casing in each
well to ston caving and facilitate
drilling. The4 Sinclair has drilled an-
other soft sand that is oil bearing,
and will continue to around 2,800
feet in search of what Is believed to
be a big producing sand. The Part-
ridge has reached a depth of around
2.400 feet, and is expected to reach
the sand at any moment. The own»
ers of the Partridge, Messrs. Per-
rine, Grundy and Glasscock, of
Hutchinson, Kan., are here to see
their well drilled in.
The Buena Vista Oil company
which recently bought the holdings
of the defunct Texas-Oklahoma com-
pany, announced Saturday ..that it
would siart drilling immediately on
Tlall mountain, two miles west of Una
city.

GENE l'PSHAW 18 DISTRIBUTING
SAMPLES FROM DOG RIDGE
IN TEMPLK
The Bell County Oil company Is
already producing oil from wells on:
its leases.
This may sound like a Joke, and,
so far as the dividend paying, or
commercial phase of the matter Is
concerned, It Is a Joke, but the ac-
tual oil being taken from a number
of wells on Dog Ridge and placed
on exhibition is no Joke, but real oil.
The fact that there are a docen
or more shallow wells, ranging
around 300 feet deep, In the Dog
Ridge section west of Belton, that
produce oil Is so well l-nown among
most of the people of Bell county
that local citizens are prone to over-
look the value or significance of tha
fact, and leave it to some visitor or
outsider to call attention to its value.
Anyway, that la what happened yes-
terday.
A business man from an adjoining
county came to Belton to look Into
the Bell County oil prospect. Ho was
taken for a drive over a portion of
the Bell County Oil company's acre-
age, and, Incidentally, was shown the
many shallow wells from which oil
either flows with the artesian water,
or else may be drawn up In the bail-
er or bucket. He went from well to
well, and drew bailer after boiler

Argentine Farmers on Strike.
(Associated Prei» Dispatch.)
iluenos Aires, March 31.—Argen-
tine farmers who are refusing to
plant crops th's year, have Informed
the minister of agriculture that they
receive only one peso, forty-one cen-
tavos, for 100 kilograms of corn.
This is equivalent to sixty cents
American. The farmers refuse to
plant their fields again unless they
are guaranteed a price of-three pesos,
50 centavos which is etiuivalent to
one dollar forty-nine cents American.
"Oreat Caesar's ghost!" lie finally
exclaimed. "What more evidence d >
you people want that you have oil
than the actual oil itself? Bring the
people out here and show them what
you have shown me, and your stock
will all be taken In twenty-four
hours."
It was explained to him that every
citizen of this port of the county
knew of the presence of this oil—
had known It for years—in fa<;t the
farmers in that section had long ag->
come to look upon It as a curse, or
pest, because it came in and spoiled
all their water wells.
And that Is a known fact. Kor
twenty years this oil has been in
evidence, flowing from shallow ar-
tesian wells, rising In wells that do i
not flow, running out of crevices and
from wet weather springs, fairly ooz-
ing from the surface of the ground,
as If to Invite development. And Its
presence has become so well known
and common that It haa excited no
Interest or comment.
But now, with the world clamoring
for oil, and with prices several hun-
dred percent higher than In years
past, and with the other rich finds
being made In almost every other
quarter of the state, and with geolo-
gist after geologist reiterating over
and over that big oil Is surj to I*
found here, and that the presence of
shallow or slpage oil is only one of
the many Indications of its presence,
the citizens of Bell county have fi-
nally awakened to the osslbilitles
which exist here, and they are going
after the burled treasure with a will j instance
that means no stone will be left
unturned to bring forth the
wealth.
Acting upon the suggestion of the
visiting Investor yesterday, (Jene Up-
shaw filled a number of bottles with
oil from the wells on Dog Ridge

Captain Chamberlain drew from
