U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Meeting -
Mineral Wells, Texas Date Taken: 2/24/03
MR. SARGENT: Not small arms. Not from
an exploding ordnance concern.
MR. CONDIKE: There may be a concern for
lead contamination in the soil from the lead bullets.
It depends upon where it is and the type of soils that's
there because the chemistry of the soil can affect
whether the lead is a problem in the environment or not.
UNIDENTIFIED SPEAKER: Has it been a
problem anywhere? I'm sure you've been looking into it.
MR. CONDIKE: I have at least one site
down in Victoria, Texas. It was a shotgun range for an
Air Force base where they would train the gunners in
airplanes to lead their targets literally using hand
shotguns, just like you're shooting skeet. They
practiced so much that there was literally a black layer
of shotgun pellets on the ground. And you'd slip and
fall, it was like marbles and we had to clean that up,
not just the shotgun pellets, but the soil had been
contaminated with lead, so I'm sure there are other
areas like that out there.
UNIDENTIFIED SPEAKER: But basically the
small caliber ammunition is of no great concern?
MR. CONDIKE: No.
MR. SARGENT: If you have backstop, a
backstop may be a concern or rifle range attack, large
