U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Meeting -
Mineral Wells, Texas Date Taken: 2/24/03
UNIDENTIFIED SPEAKER: I know of some
places to find these up and down these roads. You go up
and down these rough roads and it looks like they
rattled out of a Jeep and roll off to the side.
MR. CONDIKE: That's true.
MR. SARGENT: We find land mines gathered
where people pick them up and then decide they don't
want them anymore and they throw them off on the side of
the road. We find a lot of land mines like that.
And if you get into some of these rural
areas the shells, as they worked the ditches on the side
and roll the road up they start uncovering these things
that's eroded and throw them up on the ditch.
If you're in an impact area, yeah, you
can find a lot of stuff. We were just up at Camp Swift
down in Bastrop last week and we went out there and
walking along the road and found a base plate of a four
deuce mortar round in the dirt road and pieces of
fragments from a 37 millimeter shell in the impact area.
So the stuff was all over the roads everywhere.
In the right places you'll find it just
laying out.
MR. CONDIKE: Along the-roads and along
the fence lines the farmers have picked it up -- get
caught in the tractor, they pick it up and throw it to
