The removal of Agent McGtlh

it is remarkable at the first inst-

of tbe poor Indian has been able
to advance beyond tbe idea of the

ofteial scalps.
Betwee* strikes that paralyse
business, anarchists who assail life,
floods that mandate and tornadoes
that devastate, this country has
beon undergoing a pretty severe
overhauling. Let as hope that the
reaction will be as vigorous and
far-reaching.

A rATBB read before the recent
Pennsylvania sanitary convention
asserts that tbe only water ihat
does BOt contain morbific qualities
is spring water, which loses all
these "qualities in running through
the earth. Banning water, it con-
tends, does not purify itself. Biv-
ers that are polluted with noxioua
matter at one point will preserve
and bear them to other points, and
thus distribute the germs of ty-
phoid fever and other diseases
many miles away from the place
where the poison entered the
stream.
We sometimes wonder what in-
sufferable nonsense the writers on
hygienic science will give us next.
The air we breathe, the water we
drink, the food we eat, and even
the clothes we wear, are, accord
ing to them, laden with fatal im-
purities, whose existence was
never even suspected till these
searchers for microbes, bacilli and
other microscopic monsters reveal-
ed them to us by the million. How
long will the investigators torment
us? Spring water is very good,
no doubt; but river water is bet-
ter; the city people who drink if
have better health as a rule thnn
the county people who get their
water from wells and springs. And
even if this were not so—if spring
water only were pure and whole-
some, how are the millions of peo-
ple who live in cities and towns to
get it ?
Iw relation to the Southwestern
trip of the labor investigating com-
mittee, Congressman Crain, on his
return to 8t, Louis, told a news-
paper reporter of that city that—
"The testimony taken by usplaccd
the Knights of Labor in a very
unfavorable light. We looked in-
to cases of murder, incendiarism
and the destruction ot property,
all of which were fastened by an
overwhelming maBS of evidence
upon members of the order. They
had no defense to offer, savo in the
first place a general denial, and
then the plea that the Knights, as
an organisation, were not respons-
ible for the actions of individual
members." "What did they give
as the cause of tho striko?" "By
Jove, they didn't know. Boally
nine-tenth of the witnesses exam-
idoJ hadn't the faintest idea in the
world what tbey went out for.
Somo of them actually thought it
was over the eight-hour question.
It wss a terribly mixed up mass of
evidence. Writton out it will
make about 500 pages of type-
writer copy, and will be very edi-
fying reading, as indicating blind
obedience vs. reason."
Prom the dispatches it seems
that a strong case is being made
against Maxwell, alias Brooks, the
murderer ot Preller, at tho South-
ern hotel. St. Louis. Maxwell
made a confession, but since the
strong testimony in the way of
direct and circumstantial evidence
has boen introduced to prove that
Maxwell's confession was made to
order, this fact strongly prejudices
tbe case against him. Full details
of this case are being published in
all the large dailies ot tho country
It is the most notorious murder
trial "that has occurred since Gui-
teau's case.

A man afflicted with deafness
took a prescription to a Topeka
druggist, who filled it with care
and in his latest style. • The deaf
man asked the price, when the fol-
lowing talk occurred:
Druggist (leaning on the corner
and smiling in a won't-you-pay-
up manner): "The price is 75
cents."
Deaf customer: "Five cents?
Here It is."
Druggist (in a louder voice):
"Seventy-five cents, please."
Deaf customer: "Well, there's
your 5 cents."
Druggist (in a very loud voice
and very firm manner): "1 said
75 cents."
Deaf customer (getting angry):
"Well, what more do you want?
I gave you 5 cents."
Druggist (sotto voice): "Well,

Tub Belton Journal in a lengthy
leader urges upon the city author-
ties and tbe citizens the necessity
ot putting tho city in a thorough
sanitary condition. Every city in
Texas is urged to do tho same
' king by tbe press as regularly as
! be season conacs round. In Bren-
ham we occasionally get up a big
sanitary excitement, distribute one
or two thousand dodgers through
out town, and two or thrco barrels
of lime are put on the most public
streets and alleys. Tbis settles
tbe sanitary excitement for tbe
year.
