THE DAILY BANNER.
J. G. KAN" KIN, Proprietor.
O. H. P. GARRETT. Editor
Saturday, May 25. 18S9. ;
Sir Chas. Russell's fee in defend-,
in<? the Parnell case is £50,000. and,
ail patriotic Irishmen everywhere
are expected to contribute.
It reallv begins to look as if the .
jute bagging trust would go a beg-,
ging and not be able to sell its ma-
teria! at any price.
The type founders' association
trust Las "busted," and a big reduc-
tion in type metal and printers' ma-
terial is looked for.
Theee will be about twenty con-
tests for seats in the next national
house of representatives. Nearly
all of them will be from the South.
The bill to prohibit the manufac-j
tare or sale of spirituous or malt i
liquors was defeated in the Illinois
legislature on last Tuesday by a vote
of 55 for to C2 against.
Sam Jones is now anchored at Dan-
ville, Va.. and it is thought that he!
will be in no Lurry to leave, as there j
are plenty of sinners and good smok-
in"- tobacco there.
The New Orleans Times-Democrat
has come to the conclusion that
about as many people are killed by
rough-on-rats as are rodents, and
thinks the manufacture and sale of it
should be prohibited.
Buffalo Bill has captured ail
Paris, and as was feared, is proving
a bigger attraction than the world's
fair. The associated press says that
President Carnot and members of
cabinet turned out to the show the
other day.
Sam Jokes is a strong believer in
that portion of the scriptures which
says that the laborer is worthy of
his hire. The Sacramento Bee says:
"ijiam Jone$ left thif $tate quite re-
plete with big North American $ $
$ $ $. There are no flie$ on $am."
Quay has finally come to the con-
clusion to support prohibition in
Pennsylvana. He and Wanamaker
couldn't afford to stand pitted
against each other. But Quay and
the republican party will have to
make some mighty nice and plaus-
ible explanations later on.
Tee editor of the Southern Mer-
cury went to the farmers' national
alliance convention at Birmingham,
Ala., and he is naturally jubilant
over its action in snowing the jute
bagging trust under. If the al-
liance never accomplishes any more
good this is sufficient to justify its
organization.
- ....
The governor of Michigan has is-
sued a proclamation prohibiting the
importation of Texas cattle or any
other raised south of the 365th paral-
lel of lattitude until the first of No-
vember, except such as are in transit
across the state. The prejudice
against Texas cattle is founded in
about as much reason as Bismarck's
antipathy for the American hog.
In a congressional election in Ill-
inois the other day to iill a vacancy
caused by the death of Congressman
Townshed. the democratic candidate
was elected fey three thousand ma-
jority. The sucker state is getting
herself in good shape to flop over
into the democratic column at the
next presidential election.
Hon. "W. H. Buroes, "the silver-
tongued orator of the Guadalupe,"
is being talked of as a candidate for
congress from the Eighth district.
If Surges should go to congress he
might manage to keep that body in
splendid humor, but we do not be-
lieve the constituency of the district
want to give up Lytt Moore so
soon.
G KITING EVEN.
Gainesville, an ambitious town in
northern Texas, which records more
business failures than any three
places of its size in the state, is
establishing a reputation as a cen-
tre for sensational news. A report
comes from that town to the
effect that a whitecap organization,
sixty strong and composed of boys
ranging from fourteen to eighteen
years of age, has been discovered
there.—Brenham Banner.
Brenham, an unambitious, com-
paratively unknown hamlet in a nig-
ger county in southern Texas, where
the law is not known and totally
disregarded, is establishing a nation-
al reputation as the assassination
headquarters of Texas, and Texas is
obtaining a greater setback from the
fact that there is such a county as
Washington in it than from all other
unfortunate things combined.—
Gainesville Register.
TLe above is taken from a marked
cony of the Gainesville Register
sent to this office by an unknown
friend. The Banner doesn't ex.
change with the Gainesville sheet and
knows nothing of its editor or its
politics. We carefully looked over
its columns to find some expression
of opinion by which its politics
could be determined, but all we
could find in it were reprint tele-
grams, a reprint editorial of over a
half column from the New York
Herald on the late Mind Reader
Bishop, nearly half a column from
the same paper on the Presbyterian
general assembly, a reprint article
on Oklahoma, a half-dozen wooden
editorial paragraphs, and several ed-
itorial extracts from exchanges,
among which was over a half column
taken from the copy of the Banner
from which the above was quoted,
and which was probably furnished
him by a subscriber of this paper at
Gaiaesville. From these we were
unable to infer its politics, but judg-
ing by the foul slander perpetrated
against the good people of Brenham
and of Washington county in the
above quotation, we have a right to
infer that the scissors manipulator
on the Register is a bloody-shut
carpet-bag importation; for so much
ignorance, venom and malice could
not have been displayed in so short
a space by any one else. The peo-
ple of this county are as law-abiding
as they are anywhere. Some of the
most stirring ami important acts in
the struggle for Texan independ-
ence were enacted here. The first
white colony ever brought to Texas
was located within fifteen miles of
this place, and a nephew and nu-
merous descendants of the pioneer
Stephen F. Austin reside here. It
was the home of Sam Houston, the
father of Texas independence, who
has descendants living here, and it
was once the capital of the republic
of Texr.s, This county is the home
of more of the survivors of the
Texas revolution than any other in
the state, and they are included in
the vile slander. Being a thriving,
bustling town of more than 8,000
people, situated at the intersection
of two important highways of com-
merce, Brenham can afford to with
stand the darts of malice hurled by
such a puerile sheet as the Register.
What this paper said about Gaines-
ville was not said in malice, nor was
it a lying misrepresentation. What
the Register conceived in reply as a
method of "getting even" with us is
too manifestly malicious and menda-
cious to need refutation.
While ex-Secretary Bayard was a
member of President Cleveland's
cabinet the newspapers and society
gossips tiied hard to marry him off
to the president's mother-in-law. It
is now announced as an actual fact
that he is to lead a Miss Clymer to
Hvmen's alter on the 12th of June.
The San Angelo Times refers to
the Hon. Seth Shepard, of Dallas, as
the silver-tongued orator and the
Apollo of politics.
Post-D/spatch: A woman who
could not vote, nor make speeches, j
nor march with a campaign club,
has been deprived of the postofficej
in the village of Libertyville. Me.,
for "offensive partisanship."' On the
occasion of a republican campaign
dub parade she presented a boquet
to one of the members with the re-
mark that he would need it to lay
on Harrison's political grave after
the election. Having put a republi
can voter and worker in her place,
Clarkaon feels that he has purged
