Twelve years n,s?o Rodney, then a
common, ordinary looking pig, with
no indication of his brain power,
walked down tho right of way just
as the train stopped. Tho porter in
tho buffet car dumped his refuse
food out beyond the water tank, just
as ho had for months before. Rod
ncy happened down there and got a
squaro meal. Next day ho came
again. At first he got but ono feed
per day. Then i10 began to considei
and to lay for all tho trains. It took
him two months to difforontiato be-
tween tho local and through trains,
but at last lio got 'em all fixed, and
you couldn't drive him there now
heforo tho regular train time. Three
times a day—in tho morning, at

and again at 6—he's "Johnny on the

in£ cough, the result of influenza, which
nothing seemed to relieve, until I took Bal-

the train, and Rodney run him up a
telegraph ■ polo. It took the whole
train crew to keep the pig at bay
until the porter could get into the
train. »Sinco then they haven't tried
any tricks on him.'
" 'But why does he make such an
infernal noise about It?' I asked.
" 'That's where his value as a time
telling institution oomes in. If the
train is on time, he ain't saying a
word, but if it's a minute overdue
ho raises his voice and ho keeps it
up till he hears the engine. So Mai
vern people know the time whether
the trains are on schedule time or
not. Of course it's monotonous
sometimes, when they are three or
four hours off their time, but the
town has to stand it until the de-
layed train comes or another ono is
due from the other way.'
" 'But,' I objected, 'when the time
is changed in tho spring and fall, it
must throw tho pig off his reckon-
ing.'

Tho present maliarajah of Jaipur
has had a somewhat romantio oareer.
For a long time he lived in exile
on an allowance of B shillings a
week, but ono day he suddenly
found himself raised to tho throne
and tho possessor of an income of
£500,000 a year.
According to the usual custom
among eastern potentates, who are
in constant fear of poison from a ri-
val to tho throne, liis predecessor
only settled the succession three
hours before his death, and out of
some hundred relatives with oqual
claims, to tho surprise of all, he
chose the present ono, then only just
of ago.
In addition to the annual income,
there was found in the treasury
£500,000 in solid silver, which took
2U days to count over.—Pearson's

A Church Bell With a HUtory.
Tho bell that still rings every Sun-
day in tho belfry of St. John's Epis-
copal church in Portsmouth, N. H.,
has a most outertaining history.
When Colonel Pepperell led the colo-
nial forces against tho frontier at
Louisburg, and tho English had con-
quered, they came home triumphant.
Among other ttuphies they brought
a bell captured from a French cathe-
dral fit Capo Breton. Tho officers of
the New Hampshire company pre-
sented the boll to Queen's chapel.
In tho liro which dostroyed the
chapel in 1M6 tho bell was cracked.
In 1807 Paul Reveroand son recast
tho bell. —Manchester fN. H. 1 Union.
