A political statistician who bos
been figuring over the results of the
late election, shows that the popu-
lists have been making considera-
ble gains in the past two years.
They lost souie big offices this
time, and had some of their favor-
ites turned down, but, take the
country ai a whole, and they show a
gain of about 600,000 votes, a very
respectable army, over the vote of
1892. In 1892 they polled 1,041,-
028 votes, whereas the vote of 1894
sbows 1,636,887 votes. In two
years the party has grown from the
representation of 5,000,000 to the
representation of 8,000,000, and cast
one-twelfth of the entire vote.

Knowing ones say that among, the
host of applicants of the govefnor
elect, is one of Texas' fairest daugh
ters. Rich in the graces of, and
with the perfection of superb wo-
manhood, she aspires to the posi*
tion of private secretary to the gov-
ernor. Could a man be placed in a
more embarrassing position? On
one hand political duty confronting
him, and on the other, gallantry and
chivalry pleading with him for the
fair sex. This rumor heightens the
interest and expectations of the
public as to how Mr. Culberson will
settle the difficulties which sur-
round him.
The president's message recom-
mends the adoption of the Baltimore
plan for a currency system, proposed
by tbe national banker's association,
with a few unimportant changes*
the repeal of the duty on coal and
iron, and of the differential duty on
refined sugar, and asserts the inten-
tion to issue bonds at will to buy
gold with or without the assent of
congress. Apart from this the mes-
sage is a recital of the history of a
year.
Col. Phoebe Couzins has shed a
marvelous illumination over the in
dian question. The Transmississippi
Congress was discussing a report
recommending the divisiou of Indian
lands in severalty and the. granting
to the Indians of citizenship. Then
Col. Phoebe turned on the oxygen
and the hydrogen and made the

dono Uia b st to make Mr.i. Wilson
and their little daughter Maud chew
their gra^x>3 and eject the seeds, in-

to the usual custom.
Maud found the new method little
to her taste, and her father had £re-
qucnt occasion to reprove her for
not minding his instructions.
Ono day the little girl was under
the weather, and her mother thought
it nooessary to administer a dose of
medicine in the shape of two small
pellots. These, after the manner of
thoughtful parents, she concealed in
a spoonful of marmalade, which she
then offered to the unsuspicious na-
ticnt.
