Quite a number of American
business men announce their Jh-
tention of engaging in businea at
Havana, Porto Rica and Manila
as soon as peace has been pro-
claimed.
The Cleburne Review calls at-
tention to the fact that Judge
Geo. Clark is willing to "turn
Texas loose" if he can get a fed-
eral judgeship from the McKin-
ley administration.
According to the Cleburne Re-
view the" American seamen are
inspiring the effete monarchies
of old mother Europe with a won-
derful amount of respect for the
United States these days.
Supplies of all kinds are being
rushed to Santiago as rapidly as
possible, and superhuman efforts
are being made by Gen. Shatter
to alleviate the sufferings of the
people of that city and vicinity.

There are about five hundred
idle young negroes in Bfenham,

army and sent to Cuba, there to
be educated in the cauve cf

The Ennis Meteor predicts that
if the crop prospect* we bow have
only carry out to maturity, every-
body will be out of debt in Ellis
county this fall and we will have
a few dollars left over for the
babies to play with.

civil war. There may not be re-
gret at the failure of the Con-
federacy as the younger genera-
tion takes up the serious work of
life, but tradition will always
teach the sons of Confederate
heroes to drop a tear of love and
pity on the graves of the Souths
matchless struggle of what its
people believed was right. This
sentiment of affectionate rever-
ence for the past, however, is not
inconsistent with patriotic pride
in the great country of the pres-
ent, that belongs to the South as
much as to the North. The mem-
ory of other times and other
scenes need not and does not
lessen the devotion to the flag
that now floats as the emblem of
liberty for us all."
In spite of war and expectation
of war, says Dun's Review, fail-
ures during the second quarter
have been smaller than in the
same quarter of the past four
years in trading, and in manu-
facturing smaller than in the
same quarter of any year except-
ing 1891.
The fiscal year has ended with
financial results a shade beyond
general expectations, and the
new war tax begins to increase
revenue, not seriously disturbing
business in any line. No reason
yet appears to apprehend that
the war revenue will fall below
expectations. Continued heavy
exports, for the past four weeks
at New York 34 per cent, larger
than last year, against imports
here 33 per cent, smaller than
last year, indicate another heavy
balance of $40,000,000 or more to
be paid on merchandise account
by other countries to this for the
month, and yet the season is at
hand when, if ever, adverse bal-
ances are expected.
