Thcns is 110 denying tho fad that tho
burglar of today, who aims at high
game, displays amazing ingenuity in
the manufacture of scientific tools and
apparatus and also in the practical work-
ing of the same.
But ho is completely out of tho run-
ning when pitted nyaii'.st our sateniak-
ers and locksmiths, even though lie peri-
odically buys their wares for experi-
mental purposes.
While tho present writer w.ts b-ing
"personally conducted" over the pivui-
iscs of the greatest linu of ].,rl;innk<-M
ill tho world ho aer|uired inie h iI'.tcrest -
ing information concerning tho.-o won-
drous pieces of mechanism which pro-
tect the vast riches of palaces, banks
and strongrooms, and which render it
absolutely impossible for thieves t:>
break in.
Perhaps the most interesting depart-
ment was that one in which an exhibi-
tion of the highest form of tho burgl.n s
craft was being given. Skilled workmen
were seated before locked safes and
were using the almost irresistible fusing
apparatus on the door in order to ie,u 1
tho locks or were forcing gutipowde.
through the keyholes by means of a tin.
pair of bellows.
Otherswre squirting corrosivec.ieni-
icals into the locks and noting the et-
fcct, while sturdy artisans were using
the drill and tho wedge with a scientific
forcoand skill that showed they could
bo dangerous enemies to society it' they
were criminally inclined.
Tho fusing apparatus consists of a
cylinder of compressed oxygen gas,
which supplies a sir rt section of pipo
terminating in an iron cup. 1 he lattei
is pressed firmly against the door after
a light has been applied, and a stream
of flame issues from the end of the pipe
in its bottom. So fierce is this flame
that, it melts the metal in the safe door
and cats a jagged h<do through it in a
remarkably short space <d. time.
"We turn out about iiSS',009 locks ev-
ery year," remarked the manager of the
works, "and they range in weight from
a quarter of an ounce—including key
to 22S pounds, the. respective values of
these extremes being 12 ccnts and #1,-
50°.
"Foremost among those locks which
protect enormous wealth come those oh
the treasury doors of the Hank of hug-
land. The making of each of those mar-
vels of mechanism occupies three men
for six weeks and cost- >,-11 >.
"Those little (luted pieces 1 f steel ill
the head of the key—technically called
'steps'—are nine in number and are ca-
pable of 305,KSO different combinations.
"If a banker whose safe was fitted
with this lock chanet d to lose his key, or
if he had reason to suppose that a wax
impression of it had been made, all
that would lie necessary in order to baf-
fle burglarious designs would be to un-
lock the safe with the duplicate key,
unscrew the head and change the posi-
tion of the steps and then relock flic safe
or strongroom.
"The mechanism of the Iock would
instantly adapt itself to the ehantr-d
combination and could never be tei-
locked by the former key.
"This, however, is not an unmixed
blessing. One afternoon a cortain city
merchant was amusing himself by un-
screwing the steps ot both his k<\s
when it suddenly occurred to him that
he had forgotten the combination.
"As the keys iu question were capa-
ble of thousands of combinations, there
was nothing for it. but to si t to work on
a system of numbered tables and tick
oft* each combination as it were tried.
"'But that may take months,' ob-
jected the merchant ruefully. Well, as
the only other alternative was to build
a furnace round the door of the safe it
was decided to try the combination first,
"We sent two men and an apprentice
with the printed tables—great sheets of
paper several yards long—and after nino
days'labor, during which about Id,<>00
different combinations were arranged
and tried, the right one was hit, upon by
accident, and the door opened. Needless
to say, there was 0 pretty big bill
against the customer who gave us all
this trouble.

England measure 7 feet 11 and weigh
about 2,!i tons. Besides being tilted
with the above mentioned changeable
locks they have violence locks 5 feet
long, each of which weighs 2<>t) pounds,
aud gunpowder proof locks, having
blowholes ou every side, even through
tho massive bolt. These blow holes al-
low the gunpowder pumped in to escape
and reduce the force of a possible explo-
sion to a mere harmless puff.
"It is worthy of note that there are
more than 10,000 locks lifted in the
Bank of England. Then e„mes the Sa-
voy hotel with 1,300, controlled by one
master key. The manager of each ot tin.
six floors at the Savoy, however, has a
master key which controls the lock of
every room under his supervision.
