C. Its practical succoss was, it is
said, then demonstated, although
the principle was not yet as effect-
ively applied a9 he desired. Plen-
ty of capital has been at his dis*
Sisal; and for nine months Mr.
mod has been industriously ex-
perimenting to secure greater effi-
ciency, strength, lightness and sim-
plicity in construction, and to re-

dent that the machinc is nearly or
quite perfect, though ho is conser-

chines, suited to different modes of
planting, varieties of cotton, and
other conditions, have been built

Much has been said as to woman
physicians in Russia, but according
to a competent authority there arc
only 250, and whatever their ac-
quirements and abilities, they are
only allowed to treat the diseases
of women and children. Even in
country districts, where there is,
perhaps, no male physician within
fifty miles, apothecaries have been
forbidden to put up a prescription
emanating from a woman.

Santa Clara county, California,
is, perhaps, the only place in this
country, probably in the world,
where three crops offruit has been
taken off in one year. As an in-
stance the San Jose Times recent-
ly said: -'Mrs. J. M. Jamisen ot
the "University tract has on her
place a number of pear trees of the
Winter Nellis variety, off of which
have already been taken sinee last
January, two large crops of pears,
and there is, on the trees now,
about half grown, the third crop
which, is so large that about one-
half of the fruit will have to be
picked in order to give sufficient
nourisnment to other half.

The boon which only traitors
and cowards would crave is the
maintenance of our present system
of national finance, under which
soulless corporations controlling

money of the country, annually
rob the industrial masses of the
pain and profits of their labor.

The young man that leaves his
father's pleasant farm home to
take a clerkship in a city, brings
weary, trouble and, in many in-
stances, moral degradation upon
himself that he would have never
known, had he remained on the
farm. A farm life is the freest,
?wrest and best that man ever fol-
owed.
"I can't keep my girls from
climbing cherry trees," writes an
anxious mother; "what shall I do
about it ?" Well, mother, you can
tie them to the bed-post, or to your
apron string, but our advice is,
"Let 'em climb." It doesn't cost
any more to set a girl's arm or leg
than a boy's, and, besides, girls
