It is generally recognized that
the number of words used in our
daily life is very small Perhaps
not more than two or three
thousand in all are in oommon
use. Of course, there are some
few people like dictionary makers
who know more, but the average
man gets along very comfortably
on that limited supply. It is only
when flowery writers undertake to
desonbe the indescribable that
new words have to be invented to
tell what they think they see. Tbo
man who comes home late, and
whose wife talks to hied for two
hours in a whisper, to keep from
waking the baby, believes that
there are many more words in
use than is generally supposed,
and that there is no earthly use in
adding to the visiblo supply. It
is only when ho begins to tell lies
that he wishes for more and
I strange words that he knows Can-
I not be recalled. As a matter of |
fact, it takes but very few words
| for a man to tell all he knows.
For the cheer of younger men
in all departments, let me say you
will come out all right if you
mind your own business and are
patient. The assault of the world
| is only being rubbed down by a
rough Turkish towel; and it im-
proves the circulation and makes
one more vigorous. While the fu
ture holds for me many mysteries
wbioh I do not pretend to solve, I
am living in expectation that when
my poor work is done 1 shall go
[ through the gates and meet my
Lord and all my kindred who
have preceded me, a preoious
| group whom I miss more and
more as the years go by, and I at-
test before earth and heaven that
the glories of the heavenly world
illumine my pathway. In courts
of law the witness may kiss tho
| Bible or lift his right hand in oath,
but as I have often kissed the dear
old Book, I now lift my right
hand and take oath by Him that
Iiveth forever and ever that God
is good, and that the Gospel is a
mighty consolation in days of
trouble, and that tho best Iriend
a man ever bad is Jesus, and that
heaven is absolutely sure to those
who trust and serve the blessed
Redeemer.

A very smart boy at a large
I gathering of people pointed out a
pretty gtrland said: "That girl
is my own sister j her father is not
I my father, neither is her mother
my mother," and left the puzzled
crowd to solve tho problem. An
| old man oame up to a group of la-
dies and gentlemen busily on-
! gegsd in trying to solve the mys-
| tery. He stopped and listened to
them awhile and then said: "I
can solve that problem." "How
i» ?" said one ol the hearers.
"Why, that boy just lied," said the
old man and he walked on.—Hen-

Tho following aro tbe latest
published figures: The human
family living on earth to-day con*
sists of about 1,460,000,000 persons
in round numbers. Of these only
[about 600,000,000, or one-tbird,
of their bodies covered: only &
j 000,000 live in houses, 7<j0,d00,000
in huts or caves, while the remain-
ing 260,000,000 have no home or
shelter whatever.
GOOD NOAOe.
Galveston Tribune:
For years tbo public press has
been preaching tho gospel of good
roads and striving to educate the
agricultural classes especially on
tho subject.
The last New York legislature
appointed a committeo to look
into tjy> matter of good roads and
tho committee's report which has
just been printed, prosonts so mo
very interesting facts. According
to this report, as summarised by
tho St. Louis Globe-Democrat, tho
average cost of taking produce to
market in New York at present is
fl.66 per ton for each six miles,
the average haul, or 26 cents per
mile. The estimate per ton per
mile on a good maoadam road is 7
cents, and it all tbe roads of the
State wore of this description the
annual saving in the haul without
regard for wear and tear, would be
about 916,000,000. As matters
stand, the farmers pay an annual
road assessment of 19,000,000. It
is tbe opinion of the committeo
that the State should at once begin
the work of road improvement by
agreeing to pay one-third of tbo
cost, tbe counties to pay tho other
two thirds.
If the interest of the farmer in
the matter of dirt roads, which he
uses so muofa, could be aroused to
the same extent that it has been in
the matter of railroads, which he
uses so little, the needed reforms
might be brought about in very
short order.
