v A Deserved Reward.
Arkansaw Traveler.
A party of tired travelers sat
around the door pi' a country hotel
in Arkansaw.' The proprietor, .a
gruff old fellow, sat on a cracker-
box.
"What is this country maiuly
noted fori"' some one asked of the
proprietor.
"Ugly women," he replied.
"What!" exclaimed a man who
had taken no part in the conver-
sation "You don't mean it, do
you
"Reckon I do, podner. This
community has got the ugliest
women in the state."
"Hero, old man, take this 810
bill. 1 have traveled all over the
state and this is the first neigh-
borhood I've seen that was not
noted for its handsome women. I
am a prohibitionist, but take this
money and get drunk on it. A
truthful man should be rewarded."

Much apprehension is felt at the
onormons proportions attained by
the locust plague in the central
Spanish provinces. In tho province
of Cindad Real not one municipal
district is free from the scourge,
and the loss sustained by the
farmors in this province alone
is estimated at two millions
of pounds sterling. Some idoa
of the proportion of tho plague
may bo gathered from the
fact that when a band of locusts
takes flight the sun is obscured
with a dark cloud, and at some
places the trains have been forced
to stop till the line was cleared.
Meanwhile every vestige of vege-
tation has disappeared from tho
afflicted districts.
Knglieh Female Bitters has bccomc a Imuso-

bafpy mother tells you it saved her daughter.

Centennial celebrations are quite
the proper thing nowadays, and
they occur somewhere nearly every
day in tho year. On September 1
the city of ^ew Brunswick,
New Jersey, celebrated the one
hundredth anniversary of its foun-
dation with becoming pomp and
circumstance and history. New
Brunswick is well satisfied with
its 20,000 inhabitants, nine grave-
yards, thirty doctors, several un-
dertakers, and everything pleasant
in that way. One hundred liquor
saloons indicate prosperity as far
as they go, and one mosquito net
factory to ward off one hundred
and fifty million mosquitoes. Thus
one of the commentators on the
day's doings put it, but New
Brunswick is evidently content
in its surroundings, growth and
prospects, happy among the
marshes of tho Raritan river, and
oneimndfed years old.

Farmers in Erigland and all over
the world, probably, are studying
what crops they can grow in place
of wheat!, which biriiigs too low a
price for profit. But there is no-
where any deslfe to substitute
something else for whoat as food.
On the contrary the cheapness of
whoat is likely to lead to its exten-
sive substitution for other kinds of
food. If farmers discontinue
wheat-growing it is certain that af-
ter two or three years, at the
farthest, the prico of whoat will
advance.

Adulteration of leather is the
latest, and comes from Germany.
It is accomplished by soaking the
tanned hides in glucose and dry-
ing them, which adds to their
weight and apparent solidity and
increases their value. It was de-
tected by soaking the leather in
water fbr twenty-four hours.

Many men dally polish their boots who
never give a thought to the condition of
their hair, except to harrow it casually with
brush and comb, or submit to the paralyzing
attentions of the average barbers. What
happens ? Why, this: From neglect, men-
