Defense—Minded ‘Birds
Wallop Trinity 93-65
By Mike Ramsey
Redbird Editor
SAX ANTONIO- - The Cardinals
finally put it all together here
Saturday.
Playing perhaps its best game
of the season, Lamar routed
Trinity 93-65 to remain in the
thick of the Southland Confer-
ence race, one game behind front
running Arkansas State.
The victory was a combination
of a tenacious defense and a red
hot shooting effort from the field.
The Cardinals threw up a tight
zone press and forced numerous
turnovers, which led to some easy
buckets.
Luke Adams and Lowell Hill
combined beautifully, and Elton
Hayes climbed the boards for 20
big rebounds, a season high for
a Cardinal.
Guard Tommy Dreessen came
off the bench, hit three straight
jumpers, and ended up with his
most aggressive outing of the
year.
The game was close for most
of the first half. Trinity broke
to a seven point lead at 7:45 on
a jumper by the conference’s
leading scorer Felix Thruston.
Adams tipped one in to cut the
lead to five, but Richard Hackett
notched the score back to seven
with a short jumper.
Dreessen then made the scene
and promptly took charge. Three
jumpers cut the lead to three and
Mike Hughes them pumped one in,
making it a 31-30 game at 3:27
of the first half.
Adams came' right back to give
Lamar the lead but Vince Brog-
don countered for the Tigers.
The half ended on a lay-up by
Thruston, and the Tigers took a
37-35 lead into intermission.
Whatever words of wisdom
Jack Martin bestowed upon his
charges were not wasted in the
second halt Trinity managed

to gain a five point advantage
on a short hook by John Hall
but that was to be the last gap
of momentum the Alamo City men
would see.
Following that, Trennis Jones
hit for three points to cut the
count to 42-40. Following a
charity toss by Hackett, Adams
hit his favorite corner, but once
again Hackett countered and the
game was still a three point dif-
ference.
Big Luke hit two more jump-
pers and Hughes hit one to put
the Cardinals into the lead for
good. And then came the on-
slaught.
The Cardinals scored eight
straight points to grap a nine
point lead and kept pounding away
the entire half. For the half,
Lamar shot 55 per cent, its
best shooting half of the year,
while Tech’s tight defense al-
lowed Trinity only 29 points.
Adams was the game’s leading
scorer with 29, tying his best
outing of the year. He was fol-
lowed by Dreessen with 18, Hayes
with 16, and steady Kirby Collins
had 10.
Hill scored but six points, but
was responsible for 18 more with
nine assists. He too enjoyed a
fine defensive game.
One of the game’s big stories
was Hayes. The lead former
Port Arthur Lincoln ace, in ad-
dition to his 20 rebounds, blocked
numerous shots. He was charged
with the task of guarding Thurs-
ton on defense, holding the Tiger
ace below his 25 point norm.
Killeen Gridder
Signs With Tech
Ross Rogers, who quarter-
backed the Killeen Kangaroos
over the past two campaigns,
became Lamar’s 13th grid re-
cruit over the weekend when he
signed a letter of intent.
Rogers, a versatile performer,
played halfback for two years at
Killeen before switching to the
man under slot for his junior and
senior years.
The son of Killeen High coach
Gene Rogers, he plans to pursue
a degree in physical education
at Lamar.
At Killeen High, he started on
a junior varsity team which com-
piled a 9-1 season mark. He then
switched to the quarterback pos-
ition in his final two years at Kil-
leen.

The Cardinals face a crucial
road trip this week. Saturday,
the Birds go to Arlington for a
rematch with Texas-Arlington,
a team they defeated 83-76 in
McDonald Gym earlier in the
year.
Following that game, the Red-
birds travel to Abilene Christian
Monday to meet the Wildcats.
Both games are a must if the
Cardinals are to remain in con-
tention for conference honors.
UTA has been up and down
this year, but is always danger-
ous on its home court. Jumping
Jack Sherman Evans and tough
Mark Burden pace the Rebel
attack with outside help from
Bob Peek and David Payne.
Against ACC, the ’Birds must
stop the outside scoring of Ron-
nie Hearne, probably the best
outside shooter in the league.
Should. Lamar win both of the
contests, it would set up a tit-
anic rematch with Arkansas State
McDonald Gym, Saturday, Feb.
20.
Newly Formed
Netters Group
Seeks Support
Tennis anyone? Well, if you’re
a tennis buff, things are look-
ing up. A new association has
been formed especially for you.
It’s called the Beaumont Ten-
nis Association.
The association was formed
Jan. 7, and student memberships
are available for a $2 fee, ac-
cording to Ron Wesbrooks, La-
mar’s tennis coach.
Wesbr.ooks was enthusiastic
about the new organization. “The
organization has set no require-
ments for membership, but it is
advisable that a prospective
member have an interest in ten-
nis. We have elected officers,
but we are really just getting
started. We are trying to or-
ganize a membership tournament
in March and we hope to have
tournaments all year round."
