The story of "the most
beautiful animal in the
world," "The Barefoot Con-
tessa," comes to the Jef-
ferson theatre Friday for a
four day stand.
It's another of the flash-
back type movies. Opening
in an ancient cemetery on
the Italian Riviera, Harry
Dawes (Humphrey Bogart)
tells of a funeral that has
taken place—of the hun-
dreds of people who have
come from all over to watch
the burial of a famous
movie star. But she wasn't
buriedas a movie star. She
was buriedas the Contessa
Torlato- Favrini.
"Bogey" tells her story,
which began when she
wasn't a Contes sa. She
wasn't even a movie star.
She was just somebody
named Maria Varga s. In her
story is revealed the ends
to which Hollywood will go
to obtain talent. You see
the tense trial i n which
Maria (Ava Gardner) de
fends her father, who is be-
ing tried for the death of
his wife.
Maria tells of the filth and
squalor into which she and
her brother were born. She
tells of a mother full of
hate. And all over the world
people love her for it. Her
father’s plea of selfdefense
is sustained. Maria, a big-
ger star than before, leaves
the Madrid Hall of Justice
with cheers ringing in her
ears.
But this is only the begin-

The recorded music in-
dustry has flipped over "Let
Me Go, Lover/’ The sensa-
tional demand this past two
weeks for the Joan Weber
Columbia recording after
the record was featured on
the "Studio One" TV Show
November 15 set off the
greatest excitement on all
levels of the music busi-
ness in the past two years.
As a result major record
companies putoutrush re-
leases by such stars as
Pattie Page, Sunny Gale,
Peggy Lee and Teresa
Brewer. It started when Joan
Weber's first record was
featured five times on "Stu-
dio One." Even though
Joan's was first and started
the excitement, I pick Patti
Page to have the number
