The final
growls of the ampli-
fiers cut through the
club as the machete-
wielding figure
peers through the
red fog at his
audience.
“Thank you
Beaumont,” he
yells,”...and good-
; night!”
The show is over. Bastille leaves the stage
and another satisfied crowd.
“We like to do more than just play...we enter-
tain,” admits Buddy Guarnere, the band’s lead
singer and Lamar geology major. “I feel that the
use of characters and theatrics add an important
element to our show.”
Everything from lasers and castles to an exe-
cutioner from 18th century France can be seen
at a Bastille show. The band takes its name from
the famous prison in Paris which was destroyed
by revolutionists on July 14,1789.
‘We like to play off the name,” says Buddy.
A few of Buddy’s early influences as a singer
include Robert Plant, Geoff Tate
and James Taylor.
“So much of what I’ve
learned came from folk and clas-
sical music,” says Buddy. “We
want lyrics with more depth and
meaning, not about drinking and
women. Our song ‘Shed a Tear’ is an ode to the
Indians. It’s a reminder that our policy toward
them was nothing more than genocide. ‘Ghostly
Tale’ is a fantasy song with an inside look at the
spiritual realm.”
When not working and writing with Bastille,
Buddy Guarnere serves as treasurer of the
Lamar University Geological Society. LUGS
has about 30 members and was this year’s win-
ner at the annual beach clean-up.
“Our principle purpose is to further the study
of geology,” he says. “LUGS is open to any stu-
dent who wishes to join, and the only require-
ment is an interest in earth sciences and the
environment”
Recendy, LUGS went on a weekend field trip
to San Antonio.
“Our first stop was Cascade Caverns. Then
we were off to Canyon Lake and studied several
road cuts,” he says. “Afterwards, we visited
Natural Bridge Caverns. Then it was off to New
Braunfels for German food and beer.”
What
is his
philoso-
phy? “I
don’t go
to school
just to
get a
high-pay-
ing job. I
love the
pursuit of
knowl-
edge and
wish to someday contribute to this field of
study,” he says.
Buddy also wants to work toward a master’s
degree and eventually his Ph.D. 4
“My ultimate goal is to travel and see ne^
places and being paid to do it Hopefully, music
or my field of study will allow me to do this,*’
he says. *
