Library schedules Internet training courses :
Scott Price
UP news editor
From Elvis sighting interest groups to beer-
making interest groups, the Internet has it all,
and Media Services, plans to bring it to stu-
dents.
The Media Services department, located on
the seventh floor of Gray Library, will begin
free Internet training for those interested on
Friday.
The training will be held on Fridays for stu-
dents at 1:30 p.m. in the Media Services lab. A
session will be held for faculty and staff at 3
p.m. on Fridays if needed.
The first hour class of the five-part class
series will be an explanation of what Internet is
and will cover how to get an account and what
types of interest groups and databases a stu-
dent can access.
The remaining classes will be held in the
Media Services lab and will be hands-on class-
es.
“I think (hands-on) is a lot better than being
lectured to,” Mark Asteris, media services
coordinator, said. “If you were lectured to and
then went into the lab, you would certainly ask
these questions: ‘What did he say about this?
What did he say about that?’ So I think hands-
on is always better.”
The Media Services lab will post a sign up
sheet for the classes. There will be a maximum
of 15 positions available in the class and people
will be chosen on a first-come, first-served
basis.
The department will offer more classes on
Internet training during the summer and fall
semesters.
The department installed the Internet termi;
nals over the summer, and Asteris said the
department is planning to install 15 additional
terminals over the next few months.
“Now that it’s in place and running fairly
well, what we would like to do is get the infor-
mation out that there are more terminals in the
library now and that we would like to offer
some training so people get to know it better,”
Asteris said.
Internet training on campus
Training in the use of the Internet will be offered in Gray^
Library beginning Friday. The sessions will run from 1:30
p.m. to 3 p.m. for students and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for faculty*
and staff. Participants must register in 707 Gray Library/
Classes are limited to 15 persons. ^
