In the hustle and bustle of the hec-
tic offices in the Wimberly Building,
stacked with menacing paper towers,
she can be found. Her work does not
end at the office, though. Karen
Wells is helping the March of Dimes
walk its way through Beaumont once
again to help raise money to aid in
the fight against birth defects.
Wells, director of photo I.D. and
co-chairmen of March of Dimes
activities at Lamar, has been active in
the charity since 1989. She is
involved in the organization of all
fundraising events for the March of
Dimes at Lamar in which all of
Beaumont will participate.
Wells believes that not only does
the March of Dimes benefit from the
fundraisers, but Lamar also benefits.
“It’s promoting Lamar University,
and that in turn helps bring in more
students which helps March of Dimes
raise money,” she said.
According to Wells, there are
many fun activities and other ways
that people can get involved to raise
money for the March of Dimes.
Representatives from the March
of Dimes will be on campus today in
the Galloway
Business
Building at
12:30 p.m. to
give a speech
and show a
film.
The Stu-
dent Govern-
ment Assoc-
iation is selling
paper dimes for
$1. These can be
bought at 214

Center.
There will
be a Kiss-a-
Pig contest
held at Lamar’s Springfest Saturday.
William Cale, Sue Tellier, LeBland
McAdams, Jim Rush, Jimmy
Simmons and Suzanne Harper are
the Kiss-a-Pig contestants. Each will
raise as much money as possible, and
the winner will get to kiss the pig.
The money raised will go to the
March of Dimes.
A dunking booth set up in the
Quad at Springfest will also raise
money for the March of Dimes. The

Individuals or
teams may choose
to walk.
Many groups
and individuals have
already signed up,
according to Wells.
There will be
prizes awarded to
people who raise over
$100. Prizes range
anywhere from a WalkAmerica T-
shirt to a $500 Foley’s gift certificate,
to two airline tickets.
According to Wells, the first five
people who walk into her office with
$100 in donations will receive a
Lamar WalkAmerica shirt. These
shirts can also be ordered.
There will be a picnic in the foot-
ball stadium after the walk with
many different activities and a free
lunch for the walkers provided by
Sodexho Food Services, according to
Cottle, Mike O’Brien, David McKee
and Grey Giovanine or one of his
assistant coaches.
According to Wells, the actual
March of Dimes walk will take place
April 19. It will start at the football
stadium and wind around the Lamar
campus. The walk is approximately
eight miles with rest stops along the
way that have restroom facilities,
water, juices, and fresh fruit. The
stops are sponsored by a variety of
different companies.
Wells.
Wells believes that even the small-
est donation can help.
“If every person on campus — stu-
dent, faculty or staff — would donate
$1 to March of Dimes, we could col-
lect over $10,000,” Wells said.
Besides getting Lamar involved in
the March of Dimes, Wells has her
own personal reasons for helping
fight birth defects.
“I had a daughter that was born
prematurely, and I was lucky. We did-
n’t have the medical technology back
then, but the March of Dimes may
have been able to help her. She is a
strong, healthy young woman now, so
I feel very fortunate for that,” she
said.
According to Wells, the March of
Dimes is a very good cause, not only
because of her own personal feelings,
but because of mothers and babies
that the organization can serve.
“The mothers today that are hav-
ing premature babies need the extra
help and need the medicines that are
being brought forth with the help of
the March of Dimes,” she said.
