Washington, Dec. 1.—The
nest speaker of the honBe
will be Mr. Mills, Crisp, McMillin,
Springer, Hatch, just as certaiu
as the caucus meets next Satur-
day. As a prophet with a reputa-
1 tion to maintain, there are no
sigus visible that would justify
your correspondent in dropping
any portion of this composite
name. In plain every day talk,
these five gentlemen and their
friends are engaged in conducting
on? of the liveliest aud the most
uncertain campaigns for the
speakership ever known. Each
of them is apparently confident of:
winning. It is conceded by the \
other candidates that Mills and
Crisp are well in the lead, but
they contend that neither of them
can get votes enough to get nomi-
nated and that after two or three
ballots are taken without result,
there will be a stampede to other
candidates. Mr. Crisp's friends
boldly claim his nomination with-
out fail on the first ballot, while
the advocates of Mr. Mills say
that he will be nominated on the
second or at the outaide the third
ballot.

the reporter learns the par-
ticulars of the affair. At *9:30
o'clock last night the traiu was
pulling out from Spring park six
men boarded the train, two 011
the engine, two between the bag-
gage and express cars and two be-
tween the express car and
smoker.
The men on the engine told the
engineer to hold up at a place
twelve miles west from St. Louis.
When the traiu came to a halt
Mulrennan was in his car alone.
He was near the door next to the
baggage car and had just picked
up a package when he was start-
led by a terrible explosion which
shattered the door. A stick of
dynamite had been placed under
it with which to force it open.
Mulrennan thought it was the
package which he held in bis
hand as it was shattered.
Alarmed at this he turned to
the door to call the baggage mas-
ter, when he was confronted by
two men with guns who ordered
him to open the safe. Seeing he
was in their power he did so.
When the explosion occurred
the passengers were startled and
those in the smoker raised up and
looked ont. As they did so they
were greeted with several volleys
of bullets that shattered the win-
dows and imbedded themselves m
the sides of the cars. The pas-
sengers were terribly frightened
and some of them lay upon the
tloor.
It was the work of only a few
momenls. When they got off the !
traiu they ordered it to move on

of the Indian bureau have thus

inclined to the opinion that they
