Luke Short Is a small man, of quiet,
and gentlemanly manners. There is'
nothing about him suggestive of the des-
;>erado. lie Is one of the most widely
known sporting men In the west. He Is
known to be thoroughly game. Several
years ago In an Arizona town he fought
a duel with ono of tbe m< st desperate
men In that territory. Tbo duel was
pushed on him by the other, and public
sympathy fully sustained Short. He
talked veiy calmly, and said In sub
stance to the Guzette man : " (Jf course,
It is an adalr to be regretted, f I felt
that I was In the wrong, 1 wouldn't like
to talk about it. but as I wasn't, there Is
no reason to refrain. It was all sudden,
all unexpected to me. There had been
no previous disagreement between us
Karly In the evening I was getting my
shoes hlackened at the White Klerihant
when a friend of mine asked me ir there
whh any trouble between Courtrightund
myself, and I told him there was noth-
ing. I went out into the vestibule and
saw ,11m Courtrlght and Jake Johnson
Jake and I bad talked for a little while
that evening on a subject in which Jim's
name was mentioned, but no Idea of
difficulty was nnlertalnec. I walked out
with thetn upon the sidewalk, and w
had some quiet talk on private all'alrs. 1
remi ded him of some past transactions,
not in an abusive or reproachful
manner, to which he assentd,
but not In a very cordial way. I was
standing with my thumbs in the arm
holes of uiv vest and bad i ropped them
In front of me to ntllust my clothing,
when he replied: 'Well, you needn't
reach for your nun,' and immediately
put Ms bund to his hip pocket and pull-
ed his. When 1 saw him do that, I pull-
ed my pls.ol from my hip pocket, too,
and began shooting, for 1 knew that his
action meant death. He must have mis
construed my Intention In dropping inv
bands before me, 1 was merely adjust-
ing my clothing, and never carry a pis-
tol In that part of my dress."
Courtrlgbt's remains were token to bis
home on Kast Se ond street, where a
wife and three children, tbe eldest a girl
of about fourteen years, were almost dis-
tracted with grief. Jim Courtrlght was
n man or no common history, though It
is hardly possible now to give even an
outline of his career. He was a native
of Iowa, and was born Some forty years
ago. Coming to Kort Worth In the early
days of the town, he first began farming
across the river. Subsequently be was
deputy tnnrsbnl. and in '75 and '7(1 was
city marshal He was chief of the T. I.
C. detective agency, and of late years
has been devoting his lime to detective
work.
Oourtwrlght was a splendid shot. His
dexte'lty with tbe slx-sh oter was
known far and wide, lie could manip
uiate a weapon as well with one hand
us another, and In a el- spcratc emergen
cy his coolncs- WtflCfie ?allure
^trrifls gun to operale smootlilv that the
tragedy was not a double one'. Officers
who examined It afterwards found that
the cylinder failed to revolve, and thus
11 was that it was useless when the crisis
came.
The Gazette's account closes with
this touching tribute to the virtuos of
the deceased:
Peace to bis ashes, and in tbe land
whither his spirit lias lied m-iy It find
the rest and peace his troublod life
knew not here.
