THE TULIA (Swisher County) HERALD
PAGE THREE
shopping with a friend I hardly see
anymore. I was having a grand time.
I was happily chatting away. The
heat was on in the car, and I felt like
a moment or two of fresh air. I rolled
the window down at precisely the
time a car was approaching from the
opposite direction.
Enough of the ice and snow had
melted to form huge lakes of water
on the road. I just didn’t notice in
time. The oncoming car hit the wa-
ter.
It came in the window like some-
one had thrown a pail of ice water in
my face. It was dripping from my
hair, face, glasses, coat and sweater.
All John could do was laugh. I asked
him if there was dirt on my face. He
said, "Yes," and laughed even harder.
He quit laughing when I pulled my
glasses off and was still driving. He
knowslcan’tsee without my glasses.
That’s when he started looking for
something to dry my glasses off with.
Things did not improve at the cloth
store.
Soon I discovered why John had
condescended to go fabric shopping.
It turns out his hounds are short of
snoods. John is sly. He selected a
sequined fabric that was truly tacky.
I said that would not do and picked
out gold lam6 telling him it is much
more tasteful and would bring out
the highlights in the dogs’ coats. He
said fine, bought it, and handed it to
me. I found out later there was a
pattern readily available that was
soon in my hands. I was setup!
I did some milling around and
eventually found what I needed, on
sale!
My fabric was cut and I was trying
to check out but somehow the pur-
chase ticket became misplaced. The
entire store ceased functioning.
I was told they had to have that
ticket or when it showed up, it would
appear someone had stolen the fab-
ric . When I said I didn’t have a ticket,
the clerk started unfolding my boltof
cloth and shaking out the fabric.
Everyone began to search the store.
That is when John made a hasty exit
and went outside to wait for me. That
left me alone and at the mercy of the
frenzied sales clerks.
I kept apologizing and didn’t re-
ally know why. I hadn’t seen the
ticket. One of the clerks even asked
me if I had stuck the ticket in my
pocket accidentally, and pulled on
my pocket to see for herself.
I felt like I was in prison during a
search for contraband. I was inno-
cent. It isn’t like I was trying to leave,
I was at the checkout trying to pay for
the merchandise.
When no other options existed,
they finally made another ticket. I
paid for the fabric and they released
me. There was a line of customers
behind me and they were all glaring
at me as if I’d done something.
The frightening pan is that I have
to go back to the same store again
because I didn’t buy enough fabric.
I hope they fix their accounting
system by then, but most of all, I
hope that no one remembers me.

Hi. Rowell spake to the Tulia
Retired Teachers Jan. 6 about his
work as chaplain at the Swisher
County Correctional Facility. Ac-
cording to Rowell, "Prisoners are
usually looked upon by the general
public as a sorry lot who don't see the
need of Christ in their lives. But I see
them as husbands, fathers, and
brothers. They are people who are
hurting and in need of spiritual
guidances.”
"While they are incarcerated they
have time to reflect on their lives and
most of them resolve to make their
lives better", Rowell stated. "The
chaplain constantly encourages their
efforts to turn their lives around."
Each night a religious service is
conducted by one of the local
churches. The inmates have a 30
member choir that is directed by an
inmate. The pianist also is an inmate.
One night each week the prisoners
meet to share how God has changed
their lives of crime which were caused
primarily by alcohol and drug abuse,
Rowell said.
One night each week the services
are conducted in Spanish for the
benefit of the Hispunics.
The unit's capacity is 600, and now
holds about 575. There is, however, a
constant moving in or moving out.
They are allowed to stay in the unit
for only two years. It is not uncom-
mon for some of the prisoners to tell
the chaplain they are thankful for
having been sent here and given a
chance for a new beginning, he said.
Rowell's wife, Jean, works along
side her husband at the unit. She
keeps in contact with the inmates
who have moved out, writing more
than 150 letters per week. At present
she is keeping in touch with a total of
1055. She encourages them in their
endeavor to become productive citi-
zens in their community.
Dennis Conway, a new minister of
one of the local churches, said he has
a reason for being in Tulia other than
as a pastor. He enjoys his association
with the Rowells in prison ministry.
He likes discussing the scriptures with
the inmates. They arc so attentive and
so determined to learn more from the
Bible, he said.
