that Virginia City, north of Taylor
street, is all burned out. The mills
and works are all gone. The fire
is still raging, but tho engines are
useless, as there is no water. The
California mill is gone, and the tire
is still spreading. The Catholic

Fort Worth, Texas, Oct. 26.—The
most enthusiastic meeting ever hel l
in Fort Worth was held this evening
at the court-house.
The house was crowded. Nearly
860,000 was subscribed by the citi-
zens of this town (the county is yet
to hear from) to organize a charter-
ed construction company.
Directors wore elected. The de-
termination is to grade the road
from here to Eaglo Ford as rapidly
as possible. Work will probubly be
commenced within thirty days.
Everybody jubilant.
London, Oct. 26.—The first day
of the llougton meeting was largely

Santo Domingo, Oct. 26.—Polit-
ical affairs are tranquil, but tliu
financial condition of tne country is
deplorable. The Secretary of the

Heavy shocks of earthquake have
been felt throughout the land.
Thirty-six political prisoners, im-
plicated in the rot, have arrived
from Pontro Platta.
Atchison, Kas., Oct. 26.—A, sad
calamity occurred at Giving, on the
Central Branch of the Union Puct'n
railroad, ninety miles west of tlii*
city, on Saturday last. A young
man named Wm. Mack, descended a
well and was overcome by foul :.ir.
Another young man named V\ . M.
Richardson, had a rope fastened to
him and descended to the rescue.
He fastened a rope around Mack
and called out that he was atoll
alive. In a moment lie called again
to pull him up, as lie was fainting.
This the parties attempted to do
and he was hauled up about ten
feet, when by some means the rope
slipped from hit* body and ho fell to
• the bottom. Others went to the
rescue as soon as possible, but both.
Muck and Richardson were dead be-
fore their bodies could be brought
up. They had lived in Giving only
a few months, and were steady and
industrious young men.
