A Magnificent Corporation.
We take great pleasure thi» morn-
ing in calling attention to the adver-
tisement in another column, of the
Mutual Life Insurance company, of
New York, now represented for the
first time in this city by Thos. Hoff-
man. The president of this gigantic
corporation has just left our state, af-
ter'a gratifying visit of some weeks.
Having recently invested for his
company $500,000 in our state
bonds, he desired to see for himself
this wonderful state of which he had
heard -so much, and,* as we happen
to know, he has been greatly aston-
ished by the beauty and salubrity of
our magnificent domain. The op-
portunity now offered our citizens of
securing the strongest life insurance
the world affords is an important
event to us,and should be appreciated.
VVe trust our enterprising and popu-
lar friend who represents the com
pany will have a prompt and liberal
percales j patronage.

A large and fashionable audience
filled Nolan Hall last evening, to
greet Miss Maud Grubbs, on the oc-
casion ot her first appearance before
tile Denison public, in selection read-
ings, in connection with the Yor-
waeits musical concert. The per
formance opened at half past eight.
After the overture, William Tell,
spiritedly rendered by l’rof. Werner,
assisted by Messrs. Gnase, Maeusez-
ahl, Mandelbaum, Lueders, Lewis,
and Riley. Miss A. L. Andrews
was introduced, and sang the song
entitled, “One Morning, 0I1! so Ear-
ly,” very sweetly, which was greet-
ed with much applause. Miss
Grubbs was next on the programme,
and tire house was hushed to peifect
Halienbeck’s silence on the eve of her appearance,
showing that expectation was on
tip-toe to catch the first beams ot

The city council, Thursday night,
deferred so much to absent members
as to decline to act on the petition of
the people to repeal the salary grab
ordinance. Yet it does not seem to
have occured to tlftm that the absent
members might wish to have some
say so about discharging Mr. Bud- |
long, who, so tar as we have heard,
has been serving the city very efll- 1
ciently. This latter action may have
been proper, but we fail to see any
consistency in the discrimination
made.

although it seemed to be making
strenuous efforts to do so. An omi-

about five feet long, near by. The

What a Tottering Fabric.
Is a system depleted of vitality and ir-
regular in its functions. It is only judi-
cious and prompt medication which can
save it from a speedy and total , ,llapse.
The tonic and regulating properties of
Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, particularly
adapt that benign medicine to revive
physical vigor and reform those bodily
irregularities which are a barrier to its
permanent restoration. B liousness and
constipation are permanently overcome
by it, and the digestive activity and
thorough assimilation which it promotes
have the etli ct of increasing the vivifying
and nourshing qualities of the blood.
The bitters are also an excellent deter-
gent of the vital current, since they com-
municate a healthy stimulus to the blad-
der and kidneys, which are the most im-
portant channels for the escape of its im-
purities. Pure, agreeable and of botanic
origin, thorough and prompt, but never
violent in its action, the reasons for the
transcenlent popularity ot this medicine
are both cogent and appreciable.
Rhine wines, of all kinds, at Louis

the charming naivete of childhood
still lingering in her appearance and
manner, the youthful debutante made
an immediate atid complete con-
quest of her audience. She showed
from the outset an ease and self-pos-
session that a practiced actress might
well be proud of. The recitation
“The Fireman'' was rendered spirit-
edly-, and will; a great deal of ex
pression, and her hearers were fairly
carried along with the brave fireman
in his heoric rescue of the mother’s
: darling from the flames. Miss
Giubbs possesses a naturally strong
and clear voice, and which shows
j the works of assiduous and success-
ful cultivation. Her gesturing,
J which was frequent, was notably
graceful. The torce and variety of
feeling thrown into her recitations,
shows that she is not a mere declaim-
I er by rule, but that she is gifted w th
j a genius for counterfeiting the multi-
I form passions that sway the human
breast, and for reproducing them in
j the characters site portrays. She
was vocietously cheered at the
1 close of her first piece, and emphat-
j ically encored, in response to
' which she came upon the stage and
recognized the compliment with a
1 graceful courtesy.
VVe regret that space prevents us
mentioning the performances in de-
tail, as they weie all excellent.
Mrs. C. R. Euper sang the Gipsy
i song, Esmardda. A very sweet
j piece and well executed. Mrs. Dr.
A. W. Acheson, a great musical fa-
vorite with Denisonians, rendered
Judith grandly. She has a peculiar-
ly sweet voice, which at the same
time shows great volume, and the
hall was filled to the remotest corner
with the delicious notes that came
from her throat, apparently without
effort. Baccio, a song, by Mrs. F.
A. Schulze, was received with merry
[ delight, and the fair singer was
loudly encored. The cavatina,
Robert, toi que j’aime, by Mrs. \V.
J. Scott, called down the house in
such rapturous applause that she
I could only quiet her tioisy admirers
\ by singing them a German song,
1 >y 1 ne pie- | s;le jjj ;ls Well as if she had
been a native songstress of the Fath-
erland. The instrumental nieces
were all well given, and contributed
a good share towards the evening’s
entertainment. The cornet solo , by
J. G. Gtiase, was very good indeed.
In addition to the Fireman, Miss
Grubbs recited Archie Dean, Char-
lie Machree, and a couple of humor-
ous pieces, in response to encores.
And they were all what we call ex- 1
tra well done. We should like to
specify some of the many excellen-
cies of her renditions, but time and
space both prevent our doing so in
this issue. Archie Dean, the
story ol how a beautiful little
maiden reclaimed her truant lover,
was given with a truth to nature and
an artistic flourish really remarkable.
I11 conclusion we can only say
that our feelings at the close of Miss
Grubb’s performance, were those of
genuine surprise and delight. VVe
prepared to hear a sprightly girl re-
cite pieces in a sprightly school gill
way, but found instead an acorn-
plished young actress, and one who
with the pioper perseverance and
practice, is sure to rank among the
foremost professionals of the land. 1

Coal mines and oil wells have been
