Bogie, who waited upon the injured
man, regerds his situation as critical.
There had been bad blood between
the parties for some time. A few
months ago Thompson married and
1 ved with his wife only a week or
t.vo. Previously to his marriage
Thompson had paid his attentions to
a sister of Rogers, and attempting to
! continue the same alter separating
j from his wile, he was forbidden by
j her parents to enter again ill her
father’s house. Recently Thomp-
' son accused young Rogers of finding
' I" I I Ij' r A L> ' and appropriating a small sum of
L-Lb VlVvJE/vJ A money which he had lost. This led
to a quarrel ai d Thompson assault-
ed Rogers who is a fellow weighing
not more than 100 lbs. Rogers
drew a pistol and warned Thompson
to stand off The warning was un-
heeded. Rogers fired and Thomp-
son fell. lie rose, advanced again,
and again, the pistol was leveled,
when Thompson’s courage failed
him, and he said shoot wo more:
“You have already killed me.”
Rogers at last accounts was at
large. A writ for his arrest has been
issued, and parties are in pursuit.
LATE 11.
Thompson died at 5 o'clock
Thuisday morning. Rogers was
traced by the officers until night, in
the direction of the Indian Territory.
There was a rumor in Whitesboro
Thursday that Rogers had sent word
by a friend that he would return in a
few days and stand his trial. Rogers
is a small man and Thompson was
a large and powerful man, and Rog-
ers told him he was not able to fight
him, but that he would not submit
to a beating. The opinion is quite
general that the shooting was justi-
fiable.

Austin, March 26.—Alter consid-
ering the matter yesterday all day,
the house this morning, by a major-
ity of one, passed the senate bill
providing for the appointment of a
district attorney in the 2d, 3d, 4th.
5th, 9th, 13th, iSth, 19th and 21st
judicial districts. Considerable par-
tisanship of sections was manifest.
None of the northern or western dis-
tricts demand the benefits of the bill.
Since 10 o’clock to-day the house
lias been discussing the railroad bill,
which provides a maximum rate of
changes, and prevents discrimina-
tion. The discussion has been ani-
mated, and will probably continue
until Friday before a final vote is
reached.
The senate has to-day under con-
sideration the house bill requiring
the payment of a poll tax as a pre-
quisite to voting.
The deficiency bill has been re-
ported, but will not be taken up
before Monday.
Ten days will be consumed on it
before the general appropriation bill
can be reached, which will requite a
week to consider, after which two
weeks will be required to dispose of
business on the speaker’s table. It
will therefore be seen that adjourn-
' rnent earlier than a month from now
is very improbable.
A meeting of the superintendents
and general freight agents connect-
ed with the different railroads in
Texas and their connections, met in
Marshall on the 25th for the purpose
of adjusting freight rates.

Calvert, March 25.—George
Morse, who was shot last night by
Jones, died to-day. The facts given
by witnesses and dying declaration
ot Morse are about as follows:
Morse was in his own saloon about
1*0 o’clock, when Tom Jones called
Morse from without, say ing lie desir-
ed to see him. Morse replied that
he would not come; that he wanted
no fuss. Jack Jones then entered
the saloon with a revolver, cocked,
and pointed at Morse; Morse fired
and missed Jones, who returned the
fire, instantly, with no effect. Tom
Jones then entered at another door,
when liis brother, Jack, cried “kill
him 5” Tom Jones fired with a shot-
gun at Morse, who was crouching
behind the counter, the load taking
effect in the left side of his back,
breaking the spinal column. Morse
fired but once) Jones’s party fired
seven or eight times; once or twice
after Morse had fallen. Jack Janes
is sheriff of this county; Tom Jones
is deputy. Jim Stearns, another
deputy, is charged as being a party
to the killing. lie is now in jail.
Jack and Tom Jones have left. Geo.
Morse was a popular man, and his
tragic fate has caused much excite-
ment and indignation.
Dead Cody Found.
Texarkana, March 26.—Satur-
day, three miles soutli of town, in a
small creek, the remains of a man
were found, the flesh being entirely
eaten off by hogs. No clew to his
identity; when or how came he
there, or how long he had been
there cannot be gotten. The clothes
are of good material, and appear to
be better than usually worn by
tramps. It is probably a murder.
There is a camp of convicts near
cutting wood; a dog belonging
there brought into camp first the
skull, then a foot, which led to the
search and discovery of the remains. !
Supposed Suicide.
Texarkana, March 26.—M. A. j
Rand, alias Ettie Arlington, an in- j
mute of a notorious house of ill-fame j
known as “Joe’s Saloon,” on Front i
street, died suddenly last night, sup- j
posed to be a suicide. The coroner’s 1
jury rendered a verdict that she came I
to her death from an overdose of |
chloral, administered by her own
hand, but could obtain no evidence
as to whether it was taken with in-
tention to commit suicide or not.
She lias been here some time, but
iittle is known of bet or vvllo she is.

ELDER WHITE.
Affirms the SpvbiiIIi Day to
the Christian Sabbath.
The Jewish Sabbath was a remin-
der of ihe first day of the falling man-
na, which saved the people from
death, to be observed “until the seed
should come”—the Messiah—and
then no longer obligatory, for when
the type merges in the L>ody of the
ty pe, tne substance of the shadow—
the type—loses all its significance;
and when Christ Jesus affiims“I am
that bread which came down from
Heaven,” would any sane man fol-
low the shadow and reject the suL-
st nice ?
He who asserts that the seventh
day instead of the eighth, should be
enforced as the true Sabbath, is oc-
cupying Jewish ground, and is bound
by all the force of law to keep the
festival as Jews did, and all the asso-
c ations of the typical Sabbath must
b.- saeredly regarded. Fix upon the
seventh day and Judaism is obligato
ry. The last, the great day of the
feast of Tabernacles, was the eighth
day, of which day Christ is Lord,
and not Moses. Hence it Was call-
ed the Lord’s day.—Rev. !, 10.
Dom Calmet says from the very
beginning the day of resuriection of
our Saviour, i. e., the day after the
Sabbath, was honored by Christians
very particularly.
To preserve the remembrance of
this day, so glorious to Jesus Christ
and so beneficial to his church, the
apostles did not hesitate to transfer
to the Lord’s day that rest which
had been observed by the Jews on
their Sabbath.
Barnabas, in his epistle, says, p.
56, “that we joyfully celebrate the
eighth day in memory of the resur-
rection of our Savior, because it was
on this day lie rose again and ascen-
ded into Heaven.”
Ignatius, the martyr, in
to the Magnesians would
honor this day of the
tion as the “first and most
of days.”
Justin, the martyr, Apolog. 2 ad
Jinem, say's that “the Christians as-
semble together on this day' because
it was the day of the creation of the
world, and of the resurrection of Je-
sus Christ.” The same may be seen
in Ireneus, Tertullian and Origin.
This is a restoration of the origin-
al Sabbath, when Adam arose from
the clay. The Jewish Sabbath was
j simply “a Sabbath,” not the Sab- ;
j bath restored, which during their j
j bondage was lost. By the rcsurrec- i
tion of Jesus Christ on the eighth !
| day or first of the week, Christians !
| keep the rest of God. Christ finish-
j ed his work on the first day of the !
Week very early in the morning, and
j sanctified it and left it as the herit- j
! age of believers. He was born on
