POLITICIANS CREATING BLACK
MARKET ON NEWSPRINT
Recent reports as to certain candi-
dates for the higher offices in this state,
bring the information that some ol these
candidates are in the newsprint markets to
secure large quantities of this precious
item and plan printing some half dozen
issues at least of their political propagan-
da publications.
The action of these politicians has
aroused the ire of every legitimate news-
paper in the state, and there are some 696
of them, the reason being, not that any
man who has the money, can have what he
wishes printed, but the ire is aroused from
the fact that the action of these politicians
will throw the newsprint paper largely in-
to the black market. In other words, the
politicians will create a black market out
of an already acute situation in the news-
print field.
Most every newspaper in the state is
crying for paper and compelled to refuise
taking on additional subscriber. They are
getting only about one-third of the ordi-
nary snipments, some even less. Expansion
and large issues, or meeting the demands
of the trade is out of the question because
of this shortage.
Now to have the reports come out
that one of these candidates has as part
of his newsprint order a full car load
amounting to several tons already on the
tracks at Ft. Worth, and also that another
candidate has placed an order for papers
to be printed for a period of six weeks and
that every mail box in the state is to be
mailed such papers, is enough to arouse the
ire and pronounced opposition of all the
legitimate newspapers of the state.
Not only will it eat into their supply
of newsprint should these candidates be
successful, but it will most certainly create
a black market on newsprint and run the
price still higher. Newsprint price is al-
ready double that of the price five years
back. The steps taken by these intruding
politicians will aggravate the situation
further and bring on this black market
condition which the federal government
and all honest citizens are fighting.
Rumor has it that out senator from
this district may resign to accept a job for
which he has been wire-pulling for some
time. Also it is a rumor that some of our
representatives, at least two, will not again
run. Likewise a local rumor is to the effect
that the place* of the city commissioner
which is now being held and has been for
several terms, may not be sought again by
the present incumbent. These are mere
rumors, but this is a political year and ev-
erybody will be wanting to know rumors
and facts alike. Generally speaking (and
a candidate is generally speaking) politi-
cians like to act as if they are withholding
from the dear public what they intend to
do, wishing to affect a mysterious attitude
and to keep the voter wondering what he
was doing. As a matter of fact, they have
generally told a “close” friend and that
close friend had several close friends him-
self, and so on adinfinitum. The Hon. Sam
Rayburn, of Bonham, stated definitely
Christmas day he would be a candidate to
succeed himself.

The Press has been congratulated by
several of its readers for leading in the
idea of building a two-way bridge on high-
way 75 across Red River. Denison and this
area in general must look ahead several
years on this item. The travel over high-
ways is getting heavier each year and it.101
will take possibly a decade to get the two- itxas; No. 56.H3 on the docket of
lane idea over. We must get started at, il1 C °m'C-’gai it Cordelia Smith

Many of our friends have been very
kind to us in expressing their appreciation
of the Christmas issue of the Press. It was,
we must say, the best edition for our meas-

since the birth of the Press 19 years back.
