The Day President John F. Kennedy Was Assassinated
Leslie L. Warnock, Jr.
As I recall the events of that sad day, November 22, 1963.
It was a cold but sunny day. Full of hope, excitement and thrill for everyone
knowing the President of the United States was visiting Dallas.
Only one thing seemed not right otherwise, to make it a perfect day.
I had a very strange feeling something was not right, something was going to
happen.
I had awaken early as usual 5:15 am to go to work. On arriving at work at
Number 3 Fire Station, I was told to ride the "seat" assume the duties of the
acting officer of the # 1 Salvage Wagon for the shift. Harry Coombs was the
driver and one other man was riding the "back end".
The morning rolled by as usual around the station. Cleaning up the station
and fire equipment. Everyone seemed to have a little excitement in their talk
and actions though all of us anticipating the arrival of President John F.
Kennedy for the parade through Dallas. Yet, still, there was this strange
feeling. Something is wrong.
We all ate lunch about noon. Then everyone started settling down in the
"Watch Room". I went to get my small portable radio out of my locker to
listen to the events of the Parade through Dallas. As I walked back up front
to the "Watch Room", I turned the radio on. I did not get half way when the
awesome news was announced. "The President has been shot". I broke out
in a cold sweat as I yelled out. All the men were stunned.
They turned on the TV to listen and stood in front in shock and utter
disbelief.
Then the "main line telephone" rang. They had called for the Salvage
Wagon to go meet No. I Chief Joe Connelly at 501 Elm Street and assist the
Secret Service and FBI in the search for the assassin or assassins in the
School Book Depository Building. This was at 1:02 PM.
