"TheBt Paso Timm Is an enterprising jour-
leadlng newspa-
Tha organization of the Denver and
El Paso Railway company is the direct
result of the convention held in El
Paso last September, of the enterprise
exhibited by Las Vegas in pressing
I surveys, and of the Denver Chamber of
Commerce meeting on Thursday eve-
ning last. In the list of incoporators
appear the names of ex-Govenor Evans
President Elbert of the chamber of
commerce, M. 1). Thatcher of Pueblo,
and Messrs. Houghton and Reynolds o
Las Vegas—all successful financiers
and well known capatilists. The or-
ganization is an assurance that the
enterprise is to bo inaugrated, and once
started, that it will be pushed to a
spoedy termination.
This is 'satisfactory information, and
cannot be to heartily commended. The
proposed line is one of great impor-
tance to Denver, and will do more to
establish the position of the city as a
wholesale center than any other enter-
prise now before the public. It will
place the city in connection with one
of the richest and most promising
portions of New Mexico, and open a
more extended area for the sale of our
manufactured products. To achieve
such a result should be tiio policy of
the business community. If this city
is to become a great wholesale and
manufacturing center, the distributing
point, commercially for the Rooky
mountain country, it must obtain direct
rail connection with every possible pro-
ducing soction in this and adjoining
states and territories.
The benefit which the proposed road
will be to New Mexico in the develop-
ment of her resources, the growth of j
various industries, and the promotion
of trade will all bo reflected on Denver.
The people of New Mexico are all anx-
ious to obtain a close commercial rela-
tion with this city, and Denver would
bo untrue to her own future if the feel-
ing were not reciprocated in even a
greater degree. Let the new company
therefore proceed with all convenient
speed to secare the inauguration and
completion of the Deuver and El Paso
short line. -Denver News.

Today the legislature of the state
will decide who will permanently suc-
ceed Mr. Reagan as senator for Texas.
The logic of events would give that
honor to Mr. Mills. He is au acknowl-
edged leader or democracy. He has
earned the distinction he asks now of
the people of Texas, a large majority
of whom believe that Mr. Mills has
fairly earned the senatorship by b is
distinguished services aud because
of his position as a leader of demo-
cratic thought and purpose, and it
looks like this belief must prevail.
His recent defeat for the speaker-
ship should not influence a vote
against him today in his own state.
His opponent is an able man but has
neither the experience nor the influ-
ence which Mr. Mills commands. The
Timbs sincerely hopes that after today
it will be Senator Mills.
