MELVIN MARKS    REDA ANN PETERS
Melvin Marks, 84, decorated World War II Marine
Corps veteran, died peacefully on Monday, March
16, 2009, with his beloved family members at his
bedside. He leaves behind his wife, Eva Sue Marks;
his three children, Marilyn Smolensky, and her
husband, Jacob; Larry Marks, and his wife, Beverley,
and Jerry Marks; his brother, Harry Greenman,
and sister, Sadie Greenman, as well as Eva’s son,
Philip Miles, and his wife, Cathy. Melvin also leaves
behind his grandchildren, Joseph, Scott and Stacy
Smolensky, Shayna and Ben Finn, and Rebecca
and Jacob Miles. He was preceded in death by his
mother, Anna Greenman; twin brother, Marvin Marks; brother, Max Marks,
and his first wife, Hallene Marks. Melvin also leaves behind his lifetime
friend, A. Pat Samuels, whom he grew up with in the Jewish Children’s
Home in New Orleans, as well as many friends and family in Tennessee,
Georgia and Texas.
Melvin was active in Temple Emanu El Boy Scouts Troop 190 for many
years and worked at Plumbing Supply Company for more than 40 years. It
is not enough to say that Melvin left a lasting impression on those he knew,
but, more appropriately, left a positive impact on many lives. He was a
remarkable and selfless, charismatic man who felt learning was a gift and
that kindness and love were priceless. He had an incredible sense of humor
and never met a stranger. Melvin was a self-sacrificing man who always put
the well-being of others before his own.
Melvin was an honored World War II veteran who fought in the Mariana
Islands off Guam. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star from
the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a mensch and the eternal gentleman. He
taught all his children to be respectful to everyone, especially the working
people of the world, and he had a heart of gold. Melvin was a giver and
provider and never asked for anything in return. He only wanted the
very best for his family and was always there for them. He gave them all
unconditional love.
Burial was at Emanu El Memorial Park on Wednesday, March 18, 2009.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the
Veterans of Foreign Wars or a charity of one’s choice. Melvin Marks will be
missed by all and never forgotten.
Editor’s note: Melvin Marks and his twin brother, Marvin, both
Marines, were driving in a military vehicle when it struck a Japanese
landmine. He awakened two weeks later in a military hospital only to
discover that his brother had not survived the blast.

Reda Ann Peters died on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, surrounded
by her family in Houston. She was preceded in death by her daughter,
Madeline Peters. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Charles
Peters; beloved daughter, Brenda Morris, and husband, Clint; cherished
grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson and husband, Clayton, Joshaua Franklin;
loved great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Ashley Johnson.
Reda was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother,
who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 20, 2009, at 1 p.m., in the
Kagan-Rudy Chapel of Emanu El Memorial Park. Rabbi Jimmy Kessler
officiated.
Memorial donations may be made to Houston Hospice or the Ronald
McDonald House.
