Kosbergs initiate multimillion dollar scholarship matching fund at EWS
School, projecting growth, encourages families to apply for aid
By MICHAEL C. DUKE
Times financially are tough. Cost of a private school
education is on the rise. Assimilation is rampant.
One Jewish day school in Houston is tackling
all three of these challenges by assuring that more
families can afford a top-notch, full-time, progressive
Jewish education for their children.
The Emery/Weiner School - thanks to a gift from
Saranne and J. Livingston Kosberg - is primed to
increase its scholarship endowment to $8.25 million.
The new Kosberg Scholarship Fund will provide
support for scholarships for EWS students who
demonstrate financial need.
The fund features a matching component. The
Kosbergs made an initial, non-matching $250,000 gift
toward the scholarship endowment. Further, they
have guaranteed $2 million toward the fund. If the

Emery football team puts on show in dominating 50-0 home-opener
By MATT SAMUELS
Emery football coach Adrian
Adams could not have written a better
script for Sept. 3’s home-opener. Two
big plays - one on offense and one on
defense - bookended an astounding
50-0 victory over Conroe Calvary
Baptist.
Sophomore running back Jonathan
Podet took the game’s opening handoff
and ran for a 45-yard touchdown, to
the delight of about 300 fans. Two
hours later, freshman linebacker
Jacob Silver intercepted a pass and
returned it 70 yards for the clinching
score.
Adding the exclamation point after
each touchdown was a mighty blow of
the shofar from the sidelines.
“If we can start it and end it like
that each week, I’ll take that any day
of the week,” Adams said. “We wanted
to set the tempo early and we got a
big lead and everyone got to play. We
accomplished most of our goals.”
Offensively, the Jaguars (1-1) were
led by Podet and senior spread back
Drew Levey, who each ran for two
touchdowns. The pair also connected
on a fifth score in the second half on
a pass play.
“That was fun,” Podet said. “It was
the best way I could have imagined it.
We knew we were going to do good
after that first play. We knew it was
going to be a good game.”
It was a much better postgame
feeling than five days earlier when the
Jaguars lost by the same score on the
road at Allen Academy.
“I think it was good that we got
that first loss because we rebuilt from

Or Ami appoints
interim rabbi
Congregation remains secure
with finances and participation
By MICHAEL C. DUKE
Congregation Or Ami,
West Houston’s Conservative
synagogue, has a new spiritual
leader, Rabbi
Matt Michaels.
The rabbi joins
Or Ami on a part-
time, yearlong,
interim contract.
Rabbi Michaels
assumed his new
post last month,
after Rabbi Shaul
Osadchey left Or Ami in July for
Calgary, Alberta. Rabbi Michaels
has been active in Houston’s
Jewish community over the
past 20 years. Though now at Or
Ami, he will continue to lead the
Northwest Houston Chavurah in
Spring, Texas, which he helped
establish five years ago.
“For the congregation,
any time of transition can be
traumatic, but it also can be very
challenging and exciting,” Rabbi
Michaels began. “One of my
goals at Or Ami is to help ensure
that this is an exciting time,
where the congregation is able to
muster all of its resources and to

HURRICANE IKE - ONE YEAR LATER
Amidst the chaos - a miracle!
Susan Perin and Sam Slobin
By SUSAN PERIN
As the one-year anniversary
of Hurricane Ike on Sept. 13
approaches, my family is getting
ready to celebrate our grandson’s
1 year birthday on Sept. 12. I can
finally write about the events of the
days leading up to his birth, during
which I experienced a roller coaster
of emotions, from extreme fear and
worry to true joy and celebration.
I have told the story of his birth
countless times, and each time the
person listening tells me they cannot
believe it is really true. As another
Jewish holiday season begins, my
story is one which highlights our
Jewish values of family, prayer and
gratitude for our many blessings. I
want to document those days so my
grandson will learn the story of his
birth on Sept. 12, 2008, through my
eyes.
My daughter, Stephanie Perin
Slobin, and her husband Todd, were
