Special needs professionals meet with Dr. Lichtman
The Jewish Federation of
Greater Houston’s Bureau of
Jewish Education convened
a meeting between Jew-
ish professionals who
work with children with
special needs and Dr.
Jeffrey Lichtman, national
director of Yachad and the
National Jewish Council for
Disabilities. Dr. Lichtman
was invited by the BJE,
the Jewish Family Service
Alexander Institute for
Jewish Families of Special
Needs Children and Robert
M. Beren Academy.
The meeting was held
at the Jewish Federation
on Wednesday, March 18.

the presentation, Dr. Lichtman led a
discussion of the issues relevant to
Houston, and the group brainstormed
in-depth future parameters and
goals that could benefit Houston’s
Jewish children with developmental

1983, Yachad has helped Jewish
communities open their hearts to the
developmentally disabled. Sharing
its expertise in bringing Jews with
disabilities into the hub of Jewish
life, Yachad works directly with
local schools, agencies and families
in Jewish communities around the

arranged for Dr. Lichtman to meet
with principals of the Jewish day
schools and give presentations at
The Emery/Weiner School and Beren
Academy, to teachers and parents
about incorporting children with
disabilities into inclusive settings
with respect and acceptance. Dr.
Lichtman emphasized, at all of
his meetings, the words of Rabbi
Akiva, who quoted Leviticus 19:18
when he stated, “V’ahavta Vrayacha
kamocha” or “You should love your
neighbor as yourself.”
“Through his presentations, Dr.
Lichtman taught the importance of
making sure those with physical and
mental disabilities are fully integrated
into the Jewish community and
treated with respect,” Brezner said.
“His support and encouragement to
the Houston Jewish agencies, schools
and professionals who work with
families and children with special
needs, were greatly appreciated.”
