For the love of teaching
For as long as
I can remember
I wanted to be a
teacher. I was one
of thos"e weird
kids who loved
going to school
every day. Now
I am a teacher
who loves going
to work everyday
(well, almost ev-
ery day).
I taught high school for 13 years and
now find myself teaching at Brundrett

Middle School. Contrary to popular
belief, I find the students at the middle
school are not much different from
my former high school students. Both
middle school and high school students
are masters at trying to get teachers off
topic. Both groups ask their teachers,
“ When will we use this in life?” The
main difference I have noticed is that
sixth grade girls giggle more than you
would think is humanly possible. I did
accidentally tell my sixth grade class to,
“Stop acting like a bunch of sixth grad-
ers!” Of course, they all yelled back,
“But we are sixth graders!”
Any student can learn. The problem
today is so many students just don’t
seem to care. Over the years, teachers
have had to change their teaching styles
to help build the desire to learn along
with presenting the subject matter.
How do we do that?
I think the key to teaching any sub-
ject at any age is being able to motivate
all the students to want to learn. I can’t
teach only the students who already
have the desire to learn, or I would miss
half the class. To motivate my students,
I must first gain their trust and respect.
Respect from students is no longer a
given just because you’re in a position
of authority. For me to gain that trust
and respect, the students must know
that I am there to help them succeed in
life. If they feel anyone is teaching only
to get a paycheck, or to have summers
off, and that they could care less about
them as an individual, then the student
could care less about learning the mate-
rial. So to motivate your students, you
must be motivated yourself. Teachers
who are excited and interested by the
subject matter pass that excitement and
interest along to their students.
A love of teaching is contagious. I
love getting to know my students, and it
is awesome knowing that I am helping
them to become well-rounded adults.
My hope is that my students know this,
and they will in turn love learning and
will continue to make my job fun and
fulfilling.
