In a continuation of the celebra-
tion of the sesquicentennial, the Port

Association (PAPHA) will meet

gram was in existence.
PAPHA has been collecting photos
and other memorabilia for the museum
the organization will someday have.
At a recent board meeting, vice
president Beverly Charles said, “We
need a benefactor, a rich person or
group, who cares about Port Aransas
or someone who knows how to reach
someone like that to help us preserve
Port Aransas.”
PAPHAhas been given a Farley boat
in pretty good condition to be restored,
but the organization has no place to
store it. Many other items have been
offered but, again, no place to put the
items. The photos are being stored on
DVD and will be available for sale
eventually through a website.
“Anyone wanting to help us figure
out a way to get a building, please
let us know,” said treasurer, Tina

The words
we use on a
daily basis
can tell a
lot about us
as a people.
Most of us
have heard
the old saw
that the Inuit
language
has over 50
words for S3 2»4F|P#liP^ i
“snow” be- wCll 111111
cause they have very little else to talk
about! Actually, the richness of their
language reflects a deep awareness of
the environment and the conditions
that make their life.
When St. Paul was writing to the
early churches about the Christ’s love
and sacrifice, he ran into a problem.
The Greek language did not have
a single good word for humility. It
fell to him to coin a word that would
work. What does it tell about the
Greco-Roman world that it would
have so many words for power,
prestige and position, but no word
for self-giving humility? The only
humble words they had related to
the servile attitude of slaves, not of
a freely offered life.
Even the expressive language of
Greece, which has four different
words for love, was without a word
that expressed the humility of Jesus.
So Paul invented a new meaning for
an old word. Kenosis means “to
empty.” Paul used it to speak of the
power of love which does not claim
rights and privileges for itself, but
empties itself, willingly taking on the
role of a servant and offering its own
life in self-giving sacrifice.
Even after two thousand years and
innumerable examples of people who
have lived that kenosis humility, it
is still a hard concept for us. Politi-
cians call themselves public servants,
but it doesn’t take a very hard look
at the newspapers to see abuse of
power, acceptance of questionable
gifts, and writing of rules to benefit
the rulemakers and their friends to
see just how far humility gets you
in Washington.
We pastors like to refer to ourselves
as “servants of the servants of God,”
and most pastors genuinely fulfill that

role. But when you look at some of
those who make the national news,
with their television programs, thou-
sand dollar suits and political agendas,
again, humility takes a back burner.
Of course, we are no less prone to
arrogance. In our community issues
and debates, it is just as easy for us
to get so tied to our own plans and
programs that we fail to listen care-
fully and respectfully to the “other
side.” As Oliver Cromwell said prior
to a decisive battle with the Scots, “I
beseech ye in the bowels [we would
say ‘heart’] of Christ, think ye may
be mistaken.” It would be a good
idea to write that over the doorposts
of every church, every school, every
court house, every legislative body,
and every home in the United States:
“Think, you might be mistaken.” We
could all use a little more emptying,
a little more listening, a little more
kenosis.

munity Presbyterian Church.
