Holiday Traffic
Fatalities Soar
To New Record
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
. • The nation’s traffic fatalities for
a one-day New Year holiday peri- *
o<l soared today to a record high
of 157 deaths, far surpassing the
figure predicted by safety of-
ficials.
The National Safety Council
estimate was 130 for the 30-hour
period from 6 p.m. Tuesday to
midnight Wednesday. i
Reports still were trickling in1
from states. - j
The council termed the New
Year traffic toll "distressingly
high," and as the toll mounted,
it urged motorists to drive with
extra gate.
The previous high for a one-
day New Year celebration since
World WaMl was 110 in the 1947-
48 transition While the low mark
for a 30-hour New Year holiday
in the same period was 93 in the
1946-47 transition. The all-time
high in traffic deaths for any one-
day holiday since World War If
was 253, in Christmas 194«.
Icy and snowy streets and high-,
ways in much of the Midwest and
Ta|n in New England were con-
sidered added hazards to the
heavy/holiday travel.
The New Year traffic toll was
far in excess of the total reported
in an Associated Press survey in
