Air Council Changes
The quality, type, source and
duration of air pollution varies
according to wind direction and
other factors, according to the
Houston Air Control Council.
There are occasions during
24 hour periods when the parti-
culate levels are high enough to
cause health hazards. These per-
iods may go unnoticed under the
customary 24 hour sampling
technique due to meteorological
Gerald Hord, City Air Pollu-
tion Control director, announced
today that his staff intends to
alleviate this possibility with a
new innovation in sampling tech-
niques. Hord said, "short con-
secutive periods of sampling,
grouped according to meteoro-
logical and activity parameters,
are more effective in revealing
the real air pollution situation
than continuous 24 hour sampl-
ing which gives only gross aver-

of pollution level fluctuations.
This more comprehensive de-
lineation of pollution information
can then be used as a basis for
solving pollution oriented health
problems. It will also serve as

sites necessary to install the
expensive sampling equipment.
These three stations are located
in the northeast, east and south-
east parts of the city. The air at
these points customarily gives

Eight high-volume air samp-
lers are located at each of the
three fire stations. Each one
runs three hours and then shuts
down automatically as another
turns on. This happens in sequ-
ence during the 24 hour period.
These hi-vol samplers collect
in filter paper samples of the
suspended particulate matter in
the ambient air.
Gerald Hord, said, "If we are
to have wholesome air, despite
the projected levels of pollution
resulting from increased indus-
trialization and urbanization,
there must be accelerated de-
velopment and application of con-
trol and techniques. That’s the
reason for this new technique and
that’s the reason for our continu-
ing efforts to find better ways of
accomplishing our mission.”
On July 22, the TEXAN ran
the wedding of Miss Nancy Jo
