It’s time for the Antiques
Fair of the Bellaire Wo-
men’s Civic Club again, an
event to which we always look
forward with a great deal
of pleasure or several rea-
sons. First of all, it’s an ex-
cellent show, with beautiful
antiques displayed and for
sale; second, we enjoy the
lunches prepared by the
hard-working ladies of the
club; and last, but not least,
the library has been the re-
cipient over the years of
some $18,000 which repre-
sent a portion of the pro-
ceeds from the show. The
dates of the air are Thurs-
day, Friday, and Saturday,
November 1, 2, and 3, and
the tickets are only $1 — the
only single thing I can think
of in recent times that hasn’t
been “inflated”in price!!
This year, the library is
in as dire a need orsupport
(of a monetary nature) as it
was 'way back in the days
when we were building the
present library structure.
Then, as now, the budget
strained and stretched in an
effort to accomodate a major
project, and needed help from
outside sources to complete
the furnishing. To the rescue
came the valiwnt ladies of the
Bellaire WomenjsCivlcClub,
eith an offer to underwrite
the furnishings for the ju-
venile area from proceeds 0
their antiques fair — whichj
they did generously and fai-
thfully. Now again we are
struggling to add to the lib-
rary and this time build-
ing costs have risen to such1

THE BELLAIRE TEXAN
astronomical heights that is
is really frightening. There
is no furniture in the for-
seeable future, so once ag-
ain, we hope that the Anti-
ques Fair is a resounding
success and that the profits
are enormous! Do come by
the library, and buy tickets
for this sparkling event, so
that you will not have to
stand in line at the door when
you arrive. Even if you get
held up and can’t attend at
the last minute, a dollar is
surely a small amount to
contribute to so worthy a
cause.
Another side benefit we
receive from the Fair is the
display that members of the
Civic Club provide us with
during the month of October
in the display cabinet at the
library - which, incidentally,
was also purchased from so-
me of the members of the
Civic Club. Predominating
are glass items, which pro-
mpted me to go back and
re-study some of our books
on antique glassware.
Glassware has always
been prominent among col-
lectable items, which is ea-
sily understandable, as its
grace, beauty, color and or-
namentation and size make
it esthetically and artistic-
ally pleasing and decorative
for display. It always amaz-
es me, however, to think how
perishable it is, and how
some of the pieces have sur-
vived for so long. Especially
the table ware, which inmost
cases was in actual use at
the time of its production
and original purchase. When
you think of the number of
glasses the average family,
with children, can break in
a year’s time, you marvel
that there is any left at all
to collect! In actual fact,
most of the items are be-
coming rarer and scarcer,
and there are more and more
people interested in collect-
ing so it stands to reason
that as items become more
difficult to find, the values
will appreciate more and
more. Also, the hand-craf-
ted articles are usually no
longer made, there are no
more artisians skilled in
their making, and nobody
trained in their techniques.

glass - as a matter of re-
cord, glass was blown in the
Virginia colony of James
Towne! Conservation of for-
ests had already become a
problem in England, and the
hot fires needed for glass
manufacture used too much
wood, so the colonies, with
