Six Bellaire seniors receive
National Merit Scholarships
Twin sisters are among
the six Bellaire High School
graduates who have receiv-
ed $1000 National Merit Sch-
olarships^ The prestigious
awards are allocated on a
state basis and are under-
written by businesses and
Industrial sponsors.
Alice E. Cowan, 3627
Broadmead, will be heading
for the Massachusetts Insti-
ute o f Technology in the fall
to study engineering. Her
sister, Katherine A,, will
enter Rice University with
plans for a biochemistry
major.
Both girls are members
of the National Honor So-
ciety, Mu. Alpha Theta, the
Bellaire Belles, Girl Scouts.
Interact Club and National
Junior Honor Society, and
have participated in Inter-
scholastic Math Tourna-
ments. Alice was also a
member of the student coun-
cil.
William H. Clements, 4110
Durness Way, will also be
going to M.I.T. His field of
study - will be mathematical
sciences. He is Mu Alpha
Theta president, German
Honor Society. He placed
second in chemistry in a
state contest, has received 13
math trophies, and earned 3
science awards.
Ethan Arbisser, 5630
Darnell, will attend
Princeton University. He Is
a member of the National
Honor Society, Mu Alpha
a member of the National
Honor Society, Mu Alpha
Theta, the National Forensic
League, and the Academic
Bowl team. He placed third
in debate in the state tourna-
ment.
Ethan was also an
American participant in an
International Bible contest in
Jerusalem, and made a pil-
grimage to Israel in the
summer of 1973. He is a
tutor of Hebrew.
Wendy Kilpatrick, 5010
Wigton, and Robert Hurlbert
8807 Manhattan, will both be
going to Rice University.

She plans to major In math.
Robert will enter the pre-
medical cirriculum at Rice.
He is a member of the Nat-
ional Honor Society, Math
National Honor Society, Ger-
man National Honor Society,
Interact Club and swim team.
Robert also received the
Jesse H. Jones Scholarship
of $3000,

in Bellaire
Westbury Bond -
one of top ten
The Westbury High School
Stage Band has been selected
is one of the best ten high
school stage bands in the na-
tion. They will compete in
rational competition June 5 -
3, at the All-American High
school Stage Band Festival
in Mobile Alabama. Nine
jther schools were select-
id from the different reg-
ions In the U. S. Westbury
will represent the South-
west Region, Other schools
selected were from Wash-
ington state, California, Utah
Connecticut, New Jersey,
[lUnoIs, Florida and Tenne-
ssee and Ohio. These bands
will compete for the number
me stage band in America
in Mobile, Alabama.
The Westbury High School
Stage Band won more awards
than any other high school
stage band in the state this
year with a total of 40 awards
The band is under the direc-
tion of Chuck Nolen. Nolen
took over the Westbury Band
this past September. Before
going to Westbury, Mr. Nolen
was band director at Sam
Houston High School and In
1973 the Sam Houston band
was named as one of the top
ten stage bands in the na-
tion and participated in the
Ail-Amertcan High School
Stage Band Festival. This
will be Mr. Nolen’s second
straight year to have his
high school bands selected
for national competition.

Nature Preserve, received
a 1974 American Motors
Conservation Award from
Roy D. Chapin, Jr., board
chairman. A distinguished
audience of 450 congress-
men, conservationists, in-
dustry and government lead-
ers attended the presentation
in the Statler Hilton Presid-
ential Ballroom, Washington,
D. C.
Mrs. Ginzbarg was one of
five women and 17 men to be
honored with the award which
has been presented annually
since 1953 to professional
and non-professional con-
servationists as recognition
for outstanding achievement
In the preservation of renew-
able natural resources.Win-
ners receive a sculptured
medallion and an honorarium
of $500.
The area that is now the
site of the Harris County
Nature preserve was sch-
eduled to become a real

Two burglars were arres-
ted last Friday in Bellaire.
Mrs. Evelyn Bolger, 110 No-
rth 1st arrived home and saw
a strange truck and two
strange men at her home.
She went to a neighbors and
called the Bellaire Police
Department.
Officers R. D. Shaull and
C. D. Sparks responded to
the call and upon arriving
they apprehended Donald Jo-
seph Thompson, 21, leaving
the residence. The other
suspect escaped on foot A
search was made of the area
and approximately thirty mi-
nutes later Gregory Burns,
25, was arrested at
Newcastle and Bellaire Blvd.
Thompson was placed In the
county jail on a warrant
from Judge Nancy
Westerfeld’s court and held
in lieu of a $59,000 bond.
At the time of arrest he
was out on bond for a fed-
eral fire arms violation and
awaiting trial. Burns was
also placed in the county
jail and held on a $20,000
bond.
Sunday a motorcycle was
stolen from a garage at 4413
Cynthia belonging to Audie
Owens.
Pot plant pirate was at it
again this week. This week
two reports of stolen pot
plants were reported taken
from 4910 Holt and 4529
Evergreen. Similar incid-
ents have been reported by
the West University Place
Police, so it is obvious that
tills Is going on throughout
Southwest Houston. Plant
people should take extra
precautions with their pot
plants. Don’t leave them
