her was some years ago,
before I knew anything ab-
out her personal life and
before she had written her
books, in a crowded and
smoky night club. She pre-
sented a delightful program
of songs, and then wound up
singing a hymn, for which
she received a standing ova-
tion I I remember marveling
that a “popular” singer wo-
uld have the nerve, let alone
the conviction, to sing hymns
to a blase’ night-club audie-
nce, and make them like it!
When you read her books,
you will understand. Her
latest is BLESS THIS HO-
USE, written with her hus-
band and manager, Bob Gre-
en, and you will find that
their religion is of the “old-
fashioned’’ kind that per-
meates every phase of their
lives. She makes two com-
ments on Christmas that I
cherish: “Put the emphasis
where it belongs - on Jesus
instead of Santa Claus.’’And,
“If we could go back to put-
ting Jesus in Christmas, if
we could put our eyes on
Him instead of on the tin-
sel. . ”
