Gwen Verdon
To Guest Teach
At Academy
Legendary Broadway
dancer Gwen Verdon will
conduct a series of classes ai
the Houston Ballet Academe
during the first two weeks k
November, Houston Ballet's
Ben Stevenson has an-
nounced.
Vedon, a friend of
Stevenson’s for several, will
leach master classes in her
own dance style. These
classes will be open to adults
and are scheduled for 9 a.m.
Nov. 11, 8; 15 Nov. 9 and 7:jo
p.m. Nov. 10.
A Broadway phenomenon
since her instant success in
"Can-Can,” Verdon
made stage history in
“Sweel Charity," and'more
recently in the acclaimed
production of "Chicago.”
This will be her second vi.sf
lo Houston at the invitation'
of Houston Ballet. Her first'
visit was to be guest of
honor at the Houston Balilr
Benefit Ball in April of this
year.
Stevenson expressed
pleasure at this chance to
bring Verdon to the Houston
Ballet Academy for his
two-week period, adding
that this exposure to the
dance style of so great a
modern dancer was an
important experience for
aspiring dance st udents, and
lhat the adult classes as well
would benefit from this
stimulating artist.
Stevenson also noted that
several other non-classical
courses of dance instruction
are currently important
parts of the Academy-
curriculum. Academy prin-
cipal teacher Clare Duncan,
trained in Graham technique
with Martha Graham's,
dance company, teaches
Graham-based classes, and
instructor James Franklin
teaches classes in jazz.
