expected to do this by his superior

There is, as is always the case, a
great diversity of opinion as to the
President’s message. The New
\ ork Sun says it discloses a presi-
dent without ideas and an adminis-
trafidn without a policy. The
World says its leading characteristics
are its unhesitating advocacy of cen-
tralization and paternal government,
am! its blandly unconscious assump-
tion that the Republican party is the
republic. The Tribune and Herald
declare it to be a plain, sensible
business document. Mr. Lanham,
of this state, says: “It is a charac-
teristic Republican document and m
unison with the general platform
and policy of that party, and just
what might have been expected.’’

For days it has been known that the
Ex-President of the Confederate
States was lying dangerously ill,
with little hopes of recovery, but his
old soldiers hoped that he would
still be spared. Friday morning,
however, the sad news wfis flashed
over the wires that the fallen hero
had breathed his last at 12:45 a- m-
He was thought to he a little better
during the day previous, hut in the
night he was seized with a conges-
tive chill, and he lacked the vitality
to rally. He expired peacefully and
apparently without pain, at the resi-
idence of his old friend, J. U.
Paine, at New Orleans. Mrs. Davis
was a constant watcher at the bed-
side all through his illness, and
although . she realized there was
scarcely any hope, she was pros-
trated with grief when the cruel j
stroke came. i
As soon as the sad news spread
over the city, the municipal Hags
were displayed atTalf mast from all
the public buildings, and the same
mark of respect was shown by the
banks, newspaper offices, and many
business houses. Gov. Nichols has
issued a proclamation setting apart a.
day of mourning, and the business
houses and private^resulences are
being draped in mourning Similar
exgressknfsof grief for the distin-
guished dead are shown all over the
South, and the people are meeting in
every town and hamlet and adopting
resolutions of respect and condo-
lence.
Mr. Davis was born June 3, 1S0S,
consequently had passed tne ripe
age of eighty-one.

Elliott’s Furniture Palace, contained in
this issue. This mammoth concern,

Nos. 517-19 West Main Street, and whose
wares till from basement to roof-one ot
the largest buildings in the city, is in a
position to oiter inducenients to the pur-
chaser which smaller houses must at-
tempt in vain to give. Being a com-
panion enterprise to a business ot equal
magnitude located at Sherman, the
enormous quantities in which the firm
receives its goods bring the important
matter of treights to their lowest mini-
mum,. while tor a similar reason the
prices paid at the centres ot manufacture
are lower than are secured by the ordi-
nary retail dealer to the extent ot at least
a jobber’s profit. This firm, as it an-
nounces, has come to stay, and is doing
business upon an enduring basis, that ot I
correct representation and fair dealing.

The entertainment ‘‘Crowning
Queen of Fame,’’ given at the opera
house Friday night bv the Methodist la-
dies is pronounced bv all who w-ere pres-
ent an unqualified success. Owing to
other imoortant engagements the
Ci.xzettvfr’s representative was unable
to attend, but has been informed bv those
on whose judgement be relies that the
entire performance, musical, declamatory
and spectacular was delightful and finish-
ed in the highest sense. The house was
crowded to the doors, a tact which war-
rants u* in pronouncing the atlair a finan-
cial succeu of the first magnitude.

read the “shoe question?” No, I
tried to once, but it gave me a crick ;
in the neck.
Where arc you going to,
My pretty maid ;
To purchase some new hoots.
Sir, she said.
Then go to Sherburne’s, who lives
